Regulatory action against ARGC |

Press Statement regarding regulatory action at Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre and Reproductive Genetics Institute, London.
Opening Statement by Angela McNab, Chief Executive “For some time the HFEA has been taking regulatory action against the clinics run by Mr Taranissi. This is a matter we have been treating very seriously. "To date, this regulatory action has been entirely separate to any media investigation of these clinics, it has been based on HFEA investigation and analysis, and has to follow due process set out by law. “Almost every IVF clinic in the UK encourages and fully co-operates with the inspection and regulatory process, as a way of securing good standards of operation and encouraging improvements of practice. “But we have faced unique difficulties with the clinics run by Mr Mohamed Taranissi. While we have tried to work with his clinics to get the information we require to do our job we have been challenged by this clinic and its lawyers at almost every step of the way. This has greatly lengthened the time it has taken to tackle these issues. “Information has continued to come to light and this morning I, as the HFEA’s Chief Executive, was able to go to court to secure a warrant. This will allow us to gain unimpeded access to the clinics run by Mr Taranissi – the Assisted Reproduction Centre in Upper Wimpole Street, London and the Reproductive Genetics Institute in Weymouth Street, London. “As we speak, two inspection teams from the HFEA have gone simultaneously into these two clinics with the help of police officers in attendance to carry out an unannounced inspection of the two buildings and to secure the information we need and are entitled to under the law. “We have shared key information with the Healthcare Commission and the General Medical Council and inspectors from the Healthcare Commission have joined us on our inspections today. We have also heard from the Healthcare Commission that the Reproductive Genetics Institute does not appear to have a registration with them. “We have received information from whistleblowers who appear to have been working in the centre. We are also aware of the separate allegations made in the BBC Panorama programme which will need investigation. “Throughout all of this our predominant and underlying concern is for patients and for patient safety. We have set up a patient helpline for people who may have concerns about their treatment. Patients can speak to us by calling 020 7291 8222 between 8:30am to 5pm or by e-mailing us on

We have also spoken to patient groups such as Infertility Network UK to see what extra support can be offered to people. “You will appreciate that this is a difficult and sensitive situation, and there is a limit to what I can talk about with the inspections still ongoing. However I will try to answer any questions that you have as fully as I can.” |
