"IVF PATIENTS NEED A BETTER DEAL ON COSTS, CUSTOMER CARE AND ACCESS TO TREATMENTS" - HFEA CHAIR
-2006 sees UK's 100,000th IVF child since official records began-
The UK's IVF patients need a better deal on information about the costs of their treatment, the customer care they receive from clinics and in the access they have to treatments, Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority will say in a keynote speech to the National Infertility Day event in London on Saturday 10 June.
Although the UK's 100,000th IVF baby, born earlier this year, highlights the achievements and skill of the UK's fertility treatment sector, Dame Suzi explains that there is still much to be done to make sure all treatment is up to the standards that people expect nowadays.

To mark National Infertility Day 2006, the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Infertility, Dari Taylor MP, has tabled an Early Day Motion, or EDM.
An EDM allows MPs to put on record their opinion on a subject and is a kind of petition that other MPs can sign to show their support for it.
The National Infertility Awareness Campaign (NIAC) would like the EDM to generate as much support as possible from MPs, to raise awareness of the needs of infertility patients, including full and fair access to NHS funded treatment.
Help Us!
Your help could be invaluable in building support for the EDM. Please help us by contacting your local MP and asking them to sign it. All you need to do is to give them the title and number of the EDM.
If you don't know who your MP is, you can find out by entering your postcode into the constituency locator, which is available on the Parliament website at: http://www.upmystreet.com/commons/l/
A copy of the EDM is shown below.
Title: National Infertility Day 2006 Number: 2308
That this House welcomes National Infertility Day on Saturday 10th June 2006; notes that around one in seven couples in the UK are affected by this disease, which can cause profound psychological and emotional strain; deplores the fact that huge inequalities in access to NHS treatment exist despite the 2004 National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) clinical guideline on fertility; congratulates Infertility Network UK, ACeBabes and all associated for organising the largest one-day conference ever hosted by infertility patient associations; praises the work of the National Infertility Awareness Campaign in highlighting the need for greater equity in the provision of NHS-funded treatment; and calls for full implementation of the NICE clinical guideline to ensure that all couples receive equal access to infertility treatment, regardless of where they live.
Thank you for your support
Clare Brown Chair, National Infertility Awareness Campaign & Chief Executive, Infertility Network UK.

North Lincolnshire PCT Suspend Fertility Treatment |

North Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust Decision to Suspend Fertility Treatment 'Disastrous' for patients
Less than two weeks before National Infertility Day the National
Infertility Awareness Campaign (NIAC) has responded with dismay to the
decision by North Lincolnshire Primary Care Trust to suspend fertility
treatment for patients.
In her response to the announcement, Clare Brown, Chair of NIAC, urged
the Primary Care Trust to reconsider its position, saying that,
"We are very concerned about the impact this decision will have on the
many patients seeking treatment for infertility on the NHS. In
recognising the devastating effects of infertility and the pain and
distress caused by the condition, the Government called for all Primary
Care Trusts to provide at least one cycle of IVF by April 2005, as the
first step towards implementing the NICE guideline in full.
"The decision taken by North Lincolnshire will be devastating to those
couples already on the waiting list for treatment, as well as those new
couples who should be referred for fertility treatment over the next
year. We would ask any couples affected by this decision to
contact us directly.
"Infertility is the only illness to be targeted by cuts and we would
urge the Primary Care Trust to reassess its decision as a matter of
urgency and allow patients to access the treatment they deserve."
Ms Brown added that, "This situation needs to be addressed without
delay if we are to ensure that couples, regardless of where they live,
have access to the standard of care set out in the guideline. I
would urge the Government to act now to reassure patients across the
country that they will not be denied access to the treatment they have
been promised."
