testing the speed of a womans biological clock
Thursday, 17 June 2004

A test that predicts the age when a women will no longer be able to concieve has been developed.

The technique involves using ultrasound to measure the ovaries - they then use some mathematic modeling to calculate when menopause will occur.

In essence this means that doctors now have the potential to tell a woman how fast her biological clock is ticking - and how long before its run down to below 1000 eggs (classed as clinically infertile).

Dr Wallace from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh developed the test with computer expert Thomas Kelsey from St Andrews University.

The journal of Reproduction reported that it will work for most women - however not if they are on the pill.

Dr Wallace said that the technology exists and can be made available at GP surgeries or fertility clinics, and would be a first step in family planning.
