At the present time I am going through lots of blood tests to find out whether or not I have Hughes Syndrome.
I have had recurrent miscarriages after IVF and have also been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, which at present hasn’t got any worse.
A while ago, after our last miscarriage (twins), a lady at my DH’s works gave him an article about Hughes Syndrome because she knew what we had both be through.
When he brought it home I read it with astonishment, I just couldn’t believe what I was reading.
The main symptoms are :-
1. Headaches or migraine
2. Clots e.g deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
3. Strokes
4. Memory loss
5. Seizures, Multiple sclerosis features
6. In pregnancy, recurrent pregnancy loss
Out of the 6 main symptoms I have had 5 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had a blood clot in my eye years ago , have suffered with headaches a lot, my memory goes through phases of loss, where I have trouble remembering names and silly things, and the last 2 I have written about.
Hughes Syndrome is the commonest treatable cause of recurrent miscarriage, responsible for 1 in 5. Late pregnancy loss, thankfully an unusual problem in pregnancy, is strongly associated with Hughes Syndrome.
Successful pregnancies have risen from 20% to 80% with treatment.
Hughes Syndrome is easily tested by 2 simple blood tests.
The names of these tests are :-
Anticardiolipin antibodies
Lupus anticoagulant
Both test should be done at the same time, the first one is more important and only one may come back positive.
There are currently 3 main medications :-
1. Junior aspirin (75mg – 80mg)
2. Heparin
3. Warfarin
The aspirin certainly helps many women with Hughes Syndrome who have had recurrent miscarriages. Heparin is normally used when the patient has had a thrombosis but it can be used in some Hughes Syndrome pregnancies.
I hope this has given some people some help. As I have said I am going through more tests after a positive initial blood test and it finally seems we are moving forward and have some hope that there is something someone might be able to do.
Who knows maybe one day I might just be holding our baby thanks to the lady at my DH’s work who thought of us.
