Sites for subcutaneous injections include your thigh, upper arm and tummy.
You may want to clean the site before injecting (with the small sterile swabs provided by your hospital – called sterets) – but this isn’t necessary .
Once the site of injection has been chosen pinch up the skin between your thumb and first finger.
Put the needle in the pinched up skin at 90 degrees.
Inject the solution – after all the solution has gone leave the needle in for a couple of seconds to help prevent backtracking.
No need to massage the skin after injecting.
Use a steret that has been provided by the hospital (small square sterile swab).
Please note that the use of cleaning the site before injecting will harden the skin, this happens because of the alcohol in the swabs.
Always follow the guidelines of your clinic when doing injections – the above information is meant as a guide only – it does not replace the medical advice given to you by your consultant and nurses at your ACU.
