After Egg Collection - Useful Information
Friday, 25 July 2003

The following information should be used as guidelines only. please refer to your clinics imstructions at all times as they are your clinic's protocols.

It would be wise if someone stays with you for the 24-hour period after egg collection.

You may feel nauseous for a few hours due to the drugs given to you in theatre. We strongly advise that you do not operate machinery (including heavy household appliances) or drive for at least 24 hours. Try and rest as much as possible for 24 hours after egg collection.

You should start to use your pessaries tonight, and continue morning and night until the pregnancy test. You may need to use a panty liner whilst using the pessaries as some is always lost.  The pessaries can cause some minor side effects such as breast tenderness, nausea and pre-menstrual symptoms.

You may be given some antibiotics at the time of egg collection and a course of antibiotics to take home. You should start taking these when told too by your clinic. Some people suffer with gastro-intestinal disturbances whilst taking antibiotics- if this occurs please contact your centre. Try and take your antibiotics just after food as this will help with any stomach complaints you have from the antibiotics.

A small amount of vaginal spotting and lower abdominal cramps are common in the days following the egg collection. You may want to take paracetamol if you experience any pain, and they can be taken 4-6 hourly as need, (if you are unsure about taking any form of analgesia, please contact your clinic for advise)

If you start to develop a fever, severe abdominal pains, vomiting, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, offensive vaginal discharge or shortness of breath, please contact your clinic as soon as possible.

The morning after your egg collection you may receive a telephone call from the embryologist (depending on your clinics protocol), to give you news of fertilisation. If fertilisation has taken place the embryo transfer will normally be planned for 2-3 days later. The clinic will confirm a time with you and inform you if any embryos are suitable for freezing.

Please ensure that you DO NOT empty your bladder immediately prior to transfer.

It is very important that you maintain a good fluid intake over the next week. You should be aiming to take a minimum of 2 litres of fluid a day, this helps to reduce the risk of OHSS.

If you have any problems or worries at all please don't hesitate to call and speak to one of the nurses at your clinic.
