Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Unfortunately cot death occurs in many families, the reason for this is unknown but there are some things that you can do to reduce the risk of from happening.

Always put babies to sleep on there back

Putting a baby to sleep on its back will help prevent the baby from choking. Place your baby at the foot of the cot so that your baby cannot slip under the covers.

Do not smoke around your baby; also do not allow any people to smoke in your house.

Babies should not be exposed to smoke, if you have friends that smoke it would be advisable for them smoke outside your house, babies need clean air, by exposing your child to smoke you are increasing the risk of your child getting more colds and asthma.

Do not put too many layers of clothing over your baby; also do not have your heating in the house too hot.

Babies are not very good at controlling there body temperature so they rely on us to help them, over heating is known to be a big factor when it comes to cot death.

You should ask your GP practice or midwife for the leaflet that explains cot death in more detail and how to help avoid this happening to your baby. The leaflet has been published by the department of health.
