Dear Ladies,
Below is what I read in Agates guide to failed IVF. The low boundary for my doctor is 5mm lining. Mine was 6, 3-laminar and they said it was perfectly fine. How can I persuade them to try to do something to grow till 9mm? I will try myself next time to have 600mg vit E, 6mg largonin and evening primrose oil but what if it does not help? Any ideas?
Step7 Was the lining adequate?
A good lining is triple layered, even, fairly dark looking on ultrasound rather than pale and about 9mm-14mm. Some doctors will insist that a thinner lining is not a problem and point to the fact that they have seen pregnancies with linings of only 6mm, but studies consistently show that the chance of pregnancy is better with a lining of 9mm than a lining of 6mm, and it is likely that the patients who do get pregnant with a lining thickness of 6mm are luckily very fertile in other ways (e.g., extremely good embryo quality) which is compensating for the poor lining. If your lining was reported as being less than 9mm, your doctor should try to address this next time rather than dismissing it as not being a problem.
Hi WanttobeMummy, I'm so interested in this. My lining has been consistently around 7mm and looking healthy so my clinic have always said that it's fine. I think that 7mm is really pushing on the too thin though and I want to do everything that I can to try and increase it. I've tried pretty much everything and it still doesn't get any thicker.
I'm just about to try a castor oil pack because our FET is the very last chance. Who knows, it's worth a try! We're going to have an early scan for this FET and I'm going to really try to push for some proper meds if it doesn't look like it's going to be thick enough.
Thanks, Agate.
I had always triple lining but last time it only grew to 6mm. You mean that clexane should help with thickness? Then I need to start it same time as estradiol patches - first day of bleeding in the ET cycle?

You give the bleed a chance to ebb a bit then start around day 5. It can help by increasing bloodflow. Also consider switching from patches to 2mg progynova pills of which you take 2 orally for 3 days then 3 orally plus 2 vaginally for 3 days then 4 oral plus 3 vaginally. Its flexible so your clinic can ramp up the dose slowly which can help and you can increase the vaginal doses if scan doesn't look good and it metabolises in a different way to patches so using oral with vaginal hedges your bets without using high doses.
Vaginal Viagra cream is v effective though so also worth thinking about.
As well as what agate suggests I'd also add in acupuncture. Helped me. Lining was 6.7mm I think, then after three acu sessions it went up to almost 13mm on ET day. I was also doing clexane and vv.

i'm also at a Spanish clinic doing DEIVF and i had them tell me the same thing when my lining wasn't responding well to the estrogen patches. i added 2mg of vaginal estrogen three times a day, and my lining thickened up to 8+mm very quickly. i also wanted to reassure you that 9mm is not necessary for pregnancy. i had a full-term pregnancy through IUI with a triple-stripe lining of about 7.5mm on trigger day.
Thanks Zonzoon,
Interesting and useful. The study does not tell about any difference in the life birth rates though. But at least it does not harm to try to grow it beyond my miserable 6 mm.

i absolutely agree. my clinic was happy to go ahead with 5-6mm and a triple stripe, but i would not have been. my gynecologist here in France seemed to think that i wasn't absorbing the estrogen in the patches well, which is why i switched methods. the clinic wanted me to add oral estrogen, but i'd read that taking the pills orally is the least effective method, as it is processed first by your liver. everyone responds differently, but the pills definitely work best for me vaginally. i have also read that vaginal viagra can help some women who don't respond to other treatments.
i would definitely push for a change in treatment and refuse to do a transfer unless you feel your lining is good enough. it's already so much money and stress on your body...you shouldn't have to go ahead with a transfer when you don't feel your lining is adequate.
I've always had a thin lining until recently - my previous clinic didn't do anything about it. When I had my oestrogen levels checked at my current clinic on a natural cycle they were below normal. Progynova tablets (as suggested by Agate) definitely helped on my FET cycle and on my two most recent cycles I had Vagifem vaginal oestrogen and low dose (75mg) Aspirin. As a result, my lining was a lot, lot better. I would thoroughly recommend going for either one or both to help improve your lining.
Good luck xx
