Wondering if anyone can help with prices of any private treatment they have had for the above please and where they had it.

Or if they have had one procedure for diagnosis and treatment on the NHS I would be grateful to know under which specialist and where as you can choose where you are treated under the NHS now.

I need to have the endometrioisis formally diagnosed but my local NHS trust want me to see the general gynaecologist (SP!) and he wants to do the diagnostic in the next 3 months, then be referred to the specialist who can lazer away the endo, but as guess it will be a long waiting list as they will need to put me on hormone treatment, which will obviously effect my ability to get pregnant.

I said I cannot see the point of seeing two specialists and asked to be referred to the endo specialist in the first instance, which my GP also requested but denied by the NHS trust. I also cannot see the point of two operations when he told me he would be very surprised if he opened me up and he didn't find endo and also confirmed I was having a really hard time of it. It has already taken 6 months to get to this point and do not want it to take even longer. I am currently unable to work when ill, about 10 days a month and cannot get any proper treatment on the NHS until I am diagnosed. In all likelyhood I have had endo for years but due to the pill and me just getting on with it; as I have always had bad periods.

I was told that this was just the way it is done but I have looked at NHS website and they can do the diagnosis and the treatment in one procedure. I really do feel like it is a post code lottery.

Thanks in advance

Hi

I am not sure i can help

You dont say what part of the UK you are in, i  can certainly see where you are coming from

2 sources of info which may help

is the bupa website you can search there for a cons or alternatively try www.drfoster.co.uk, you can search there for specialists in endo in your area (and others) it wont give prices tho but if you find one which you think yes they seem the job you could ring the secretary of the cons who can probably give you the info you need

^goodluck^

Thank you.

I am in the South but prepared to travel even to Europe if needs be. My local private hospital seems to be quoting a lot more for the procedure than I have seen other people discussing (by about 2k!) so thats why I would be prepared to travel.

Hi

I was quoted 2.5k and that was a few years ago in the south

I am now in the North and was quoted 2.5-3K, also one thing to bear in mind some hospitals quote just for basic lap and it doesnt include costs of anaesthetist so this is something to bear in mind

Thanks so much Em.

Do you know which hospital it was that you were treated in, in the South?

Hi, I live in the south as well, about an hour from London. I had my endometriosis treated by Mr Trew, the private consultations are done at 92 Harley street and the operation on the private wing at the hammersmith hospital.  I've had a quick look at their price list and they quote 2,900-3,400 for a laparoscopy.  I think the first step would be to see mr Trew for an initial consultation, which is 225, when he treated me he did my lap and confirmed the diagnosis and also treated the endo all in the same operation, I agree with you that it seems madness and complete waste of Nhs resources to do the same operation twice, once to diagnose and once to treat.

I would highly recommend mr Trew, he is a fantastic doctor, and was recently voted one of the top fertility doctors in the Uk by the times newspaper.  I fell pregnant with my son 3 weeks after my operation with him.

Good luck

Hi I saw enda mcveigh at the Oxford fertility unit. My GP did a private referal to see him at the manor hospital for an initial consultation cost about 150. He then put me on his nhs list for actual operation as we weren't insured and he said the wait was only about a month longer for nhs and the op would be done in the John Radcliffe regardless of nhs or private. We did this for my second lap too he doesn't seem to mind and as you can see he helped me twice and is brilliant!

Hi Rachysetty
I know this is probably a bit far away for you, but I had treatment under Andrew Pickersgill up here in Manchester.  Unfortunately I can't help out on prices as I was lucky enough to have my lap covered by my health insurance.  He is excellent and uses the technique of actually "cutting" away the endo rather than burning with a laser which I believe is considered the gold standard for treatment.  Unfortunately for me my endo has come back - but I really do have pretty awful endo.
Good luck  ^hugme^

Hi,
Bupa covered my laparoscopy and it was lasered away at the same time. He asked my permission beforehand to do that.
I got sent the bill though and it was about 600. This was at the Nuffield by a gynaecologist.

I've also heard great things about My Trehan, who works in the Leeds area, who apparently removes a layer of your pelvis to completely remove all endo.

I'm in the same position. It is common to first do a Lap to check what's there and then go for the treatment, in some cases followed by medical treatment and another Lap. As I have reactions to chemicals (narcotics and disinfectants) I declined to have the lap done on the NHS. If I have to undergo full anaesthesia I'll want to have treatment at the same time. I am also concerned about the level of experience of surgeons in this country, as you do hear a lot of stories where so much of the ovary is gone that you can't get pregnant anymore and how often open surgery is needed instead of the lap. I find it shocking if you compare it to other countries like the US or Germany
I was looking around for endo specialists in the UK and found only a handfull who say they are. I was then advised by a few doctors that there are NO endo specialists in the UK. This is what UK-doctors said to me... and gave me some european contacts of theirs.
Look to Germany and Austria: There are "Endometriosis" centres, where they deal with nothing but endo!
I'd like to advice you that the NHS pays for any operation abroad (private!) which it can't offer any specialists for.
I'll have an appointment with a specialist in Germany next month. If you like me to report  what it would cost, I can do so. Costs probably vary from case to case, due to different stages of the illness and what care is needed.
But in my experience healthcare costs in Germany are 1/2 to 1/3 of the UK-prices and you get a much higher level of care (compared to the NHS), like you can only get it private over here. My initial consultation in Germany with a well known endometriosis specialist and fertility doctor only costs 40 Euro! Private...
