During pregnancy, birth & post birth, many physical, hormonal & emotional changes take place for a woman.

Essential oils can help to support and bring balance to these changes....however, there are some essential oils that should be avoided.



Oils not to be used during pregnancy & avoided when breast feeding:

Aniseed
Mugwort
Arnica
Basil
Bay
Black Pepper
Camphor
Cinnamon
Clove
Cumin
Cedarwood
Clary sage
Cypress
Fennel
Hyssop
Jasmine
Lemongrass
Marjoram
Myrrh
Nutmeg
Oregano
Parsley seed
Pennyroyal
Peppermint
Rose
Rosemary
Sage
Savoury
Spikenard
Thyme
Valerian
Wintergreen



Oils to be avoided in the first 6 months of pregnancy and then following, only under guidance of qualified aromatherapist:

Camomile
Geranium
Lavendar


Some useful essential oils for various stages of pregnancy:



Back Pain ~ Mandarin, Pettigrain, Neroli (M / BA)

Nausea ~ Drink Ginger tea

Stretch marks ~ Mandarin (M)

Swollen ankles ~ during later stages after 6mths, Geranium can be used in a 1% dilution and under guidance of aromatherapist (M)

Mood swings & tearfulness ~ Neroli, Pettigrain, Sweet orange (B / BA / M)

Colds & infections ~ Tea tree after first 3mths (B / BA / M)

Low immunity & sluggishness ~ Lemon after first 3mths (B / M)

During birth ~ Clary sage, Jasmine, Lavendar ~ may be used to massage into the lower back and abdomen to add contractions and soothe emotions ~ ONLY TO BE USED AT BIRTH and agreement with aromatherapist (B / M)

Baby blues ~ Lavendar, Clary sage, Jasmine, Rose (BA / B / M)

Post birth ~ Scaring/stitches ~ Lavendar (BA / M)

Sleepless baby ~ 1 drop of Lavendar or Roman camomile to an evening bath or 1 drop on a handkerchief placed in the corner of cot/bed


B ~ Oil burner / diffuser ~ 6 drops of oil in the water or on diffuser pad
BA ~ Bath ~ 5 drops added to 2 teaspoons of carrier oil ie sweet almond & add to bath water
M ~ Massage ~ 2 drops of carrier oil & add maximum of 4 drops essential oil
