Hi all,

I was dx with POF at aged 28, highest FSH was 128 !! now 35 years old and was lucky enough after 4 years of fertility treatment to conceive my son whilst on HRT aged 31! He is now four and I know I have probably left it too long, but we are hoping for another miracle.

I have been using my CBFM again, and we have been trying for approx 12 months. However I have probably only ovulated for about four months of the year, one of which was 3 days ago, so I am currently in the 2WW. It is also my first month of being back on the HRT I conceived my son on, and also he was conceived in Jan, and this is the first time I have ovulated in about six months.

Anyway, if you have any questions fire away, or is there anyone else using CBFM and trying naturally?

    Hi Zara,

Oh, good luck for your 2WW!!!!

I am trying to conceive naturally, knowing that I have only one patent tube and also very poor ovarian reserve. I did use a CBFM in the past, and according to that I didn't ovulate very month. However, I have heard that they are not all that reliable in detecting ovulation, and also that when you get a positive result, it can sometimes be too late.

So because of all this, and also in an effort to avoid putting too much pressure on DP and taking the fun out of our sex life, we just try to have sex every other day right through the month. Most specialists suggest that this is more effective than using fertility monitors. Also, I'm not sure DP can 'perform on demand'!!!!

best of luck - let us know how you get on.

    Hi Zara

your story is wonderful and gives hope to us all with POF, can i ask what CBFM is? i am currently under treatment in Spain for DE IVF, i only found out about my POF after coming off the pill and not having any periods for a year and a consistant FSH of over 100. Can i also ask what HRT you were on when you conceived your first child, and what you mean by fertility treatment?

I am always amazed by stories like this as they make us feel there is no hope at all, when there really is. I'm just hoping after my first successful DE IVF that may kickstart something to conceive naturally.

Sorry i cannot offer you any advise as i did not realise you could have treatment if you have POF, but i wish you the best of luck.

    xx

Hi NMC - The CBFM is the Clearblue Fertility Monitor, sorry I can't answer the other questions but Zara I would be interested to hear more details about what you were doing when you concieved. What HRT? Were you doing other alternative therapies, any supplements?

NMC - Good luck with your DE cycle  ^hugme^

Hi Ally, thanks for explaining, can i just ask how would that work? sorry for sounding really dumb, but if i wasn't taking HRT or the pill i dot get periods, and i have always thought there is no chance of conceiving as i would not be ovulating? Also i would be interested to hear more about your treatment, i have been told i have no other choice than DE IVF as my fsh has always been consistently high over 100, i noticed yours was quite a bit lower than mine, do you also still have periods and this is why they decided to try with your own eggs?

sorry for all the questions. to be honest i do still believe in the chance of a miracle as they have never found a reason for my POF, i started my periods at 16 but as they were very light and irregular they put me on the pill, and it wasn't till i was 21 and decided i didn't want to be on it anymore i realised there was a problem. but apart from that i realised i must of had the right hormones in my body whilst growing as i delveloped normally. I'm hoping that if i achieve success with DE IVF that the pregnancy hormones will help my own body back to normally i could just be hoping but i really do believe that by being put on the pill before my body got a Chance to settle into a cycle really didn't help.

Like you i tried to wait before trying DEIVF but after a year i had no periods and i realised i needed to take HRT to keep me healthy.

God what a long post.......sorry to bombard you with all this, hope you are still awake  ;D

    Love NMC x

    Hi all,

I'll try and answer all questions. I was dx POF at 28, probably autoimmune related as my underactive thyroid was dx at same time. I am now on 175mg of levothyroxine. I believe this also has to be at optimum level for TTC. Anyway, I was devastated at dx and promptly went to the Lister to see what they could do. They tried clomid up to 150mg strength, no response, and then I injected puregon over six cycles, increasing the dose every time, until I went up to a max of 600iu!! I only ever got two follicles, and therefore they did not ever go to egg collection stage, and ended up converting to IUI which of course never worked.

Whats more, my menopausal symptoms were worsening with every month going by and I just felt awful. I eventually put my name on the ED list and went on HRT. I tried a few before settling down well on Trisequens which is cyclical.

We moved to a new house and the distraction helped. What is also so miraculous is that my DH had sperm problems and they said we would need ICSI, but of course I never got the chance to do ICSI as I couldn't produce enough follies!

Hubby and I had tried with the clear blue fertility monitor for over two years, and at best it showed I ovulated approx every couple of months. I have often thought only one ovary works, as the Lister described both ovaries as small and atrophied! Charming.

So, gave up on the CBFM as we were now at peace with trying ED, and in the new year (2004) in the Jan we conceived on day 12 of my cycle. I was actually carrying twins, but lost one at 11 weeks. I also have antiphosphilipid syndrome so injected heparin daily and aspirin throughout the pregnancy. My son was induced at 38 + 5 and is a healthy 4 year old upstairs now having his books with Daddy. We feel so blessed.

I must say I did try lots of treatments like acupuncture, reflexology, hypnotherapy and took wheatgrass, zinc, magnesium, co enzyme 10, selenium and pre natal vits, look at Marilyn Glenville's site. But when we actually conceived we were doing nothing as we had just moved house and were so wrapped up in the change of lifestyle. Anyway, I can honestly say I think HRT is the best chance of POFer's conceiving, because our bodies need the oestrogen at our age to normalise our bodies. I saw a specialist in early meno at John Radcliffe Oxford who thought this was the best thing.

I would not give up, no matter how high your FSH, the HRT brings it back down, any time I've been off it the symptoms flare up big time! So, there we go........Good luck all of you!

    Hi girls

Zara, what an amazing story and huge congratulations on your little one.

My story is almost identical to yours in relation to your age and to your results, only that we had DE IVF (our special little boy).  I haven't had my FSH levels taken since starting HRT but would be interested in getting it done now.  You mentioned that your levels dropped, do you know what they went down to?  My lowest was 47 and highest 147 (tested while on clomid).

I have been tempted to buy the CBFM but didn't know if its reading would be off the wall because of the POF and I have paid out for fern ones, temperature ones, you name it I've bought it and none of the reading made any sense.

Was there much of a gap between you stopping treatments to conceiving?  Were you on the HRT and doing the reflexology, herb etc? (just wondering if you think they might have helped lower your FSH or if you took them at different times)

God, sorry for all the questions, but just one last one, have you had an AMH test?

Thanks so much for posting your story, it really is so encouraging to us all.

Bella, how are you doing?  Sending you  ^hugme^  hope you are feeling a bit better?  What is your FSH level?

    Hi Kitty

My FSH was 7.1 last month, but my estradiol was 328 which is very high. Even though my doc tried to tell me it was fine.

So where the estradiol was bhigh it is supressing my FSH level :(
which im not getting a good reading.

Im on 2nd cycle of clomid 100mg so fingers crossed, im going to ov,ed this month.
