After reading other diaries, which have not only made me feel less alone but also provided answers to things I would otherwise be none the wiser. Also a great way to record step by step the journey and if things don't go as hoped this time; a point of reference for next time!

o.k, here's the first post...
29th September 2010

I'm 33, DH just turned 44 and ttc around 7 years now. I've never been pregnant but DH has 2 kids from previous relationship - diagnosed unexplained, tried IUI to no avail and with DH having kids already, we don't qualify for NHS IVF so, after much investigation and research, we're finally taking the plunge and having a cycle of IVF abroad.

The clinic ironically want me taking the pill for 21 days so, started microgynon 30 2 weeks ago on 15th September - typically whilst I'm always bang on time with a 27 day cycle, the one time I'm needing af to come to start treatment, it was 5 days late! So, 7 more pills left to take and on day 21 we're booked in to see the consultant in relation to starting down regging injections...it's only a quick visit this time; flying out Monday, appointment Tuesday and coming home Wednesday. Although we'll find more out at the appointment, the consultant has said we'll then be at home until around October 20th when we'll be out there for about 2 weeks stimming - we have to be out there for these 2 weeks for monitoring and at the end we'll hopefully have some lovely embies on board for the journey home. ^pray^

Cost is currently looking like: 650 for day 21 appointment and down regging medication, 1200 for IVF + 800 worst case scenario for the stim meds etc.

I have taken the pill before; albeit many years ago and remember feeling sicky for a couple of days however, this one keep me feeling sick for a good 10 days, also had a couple of days of headaches over my eyes coinciding with extremem tiredness... had a couple of days just recently were had shooting pains in my abdomen throughout the day and also pressure; as if whole abdomen and back was full up with air, feeling o.k now though and actually rather well -the pill also seems to have had an effect on my boobs too - they've been very lumpy & tender since taking the pill and dh has also noticed they're fuller!!! ha!  ;)

Anyway, think that covers where we are to date. I'll post again after the appointment next week.

Actually still abroad as I type this however, such an eventful day I wanted to get it all down whilst it was fresh as all this is quite confusing for us first timers and today didn't go as I had thought totally  ;D

So today is day 21 and I'll be taking the last of my contraceptive pills this evening. Our appointment today consisted an internal scan to make sure my lining had thinned out - it had! Also had to have a my (.)(.)'s examined & internal check up (similar to a smear test but just a look really, nothing taken so no pain and very very quick) - wasn't expecting that!!  :o  All was good so we were packed off to the pharmacy with our prescription to collect our medications with this time line/instructions:

    • Nurse to give me one shot of Decapeptyl immediately after collecting it from the pharmacy as it has to be kept refridgerated (this isn't in your stomach but in the booty!)  ;D  and just made the area a little tender but no other side effects
    • Nurse showed me how to draw up 150 IU of Menopur (won't start taking that just yet)
    • Wait for AF to arrive which should be around 3 or 4 days time
    • On day 5 have LH level tested in UK (should be fun as my GP's have been as uncooperative and unsupportive as possible Grrr  ^bigbad^ )
    • When LH result back; email doctor and if it's o.k, she will say proceed with stimms else retest in a couple of days
    • When Doc gives the thumbs up, I'll start injecting the menopur between 5-10pm each evening - eeek!!! (they come in .75 measures so I have big needles to draw up the liquid from 1 bottle then shoot it into one powder, draw it back up, shoot it into next powder, draw it back up then change to small needle which goes all the way in  ^eyes^
    • Fly back out around 19th October (dr will tell me precise date when she replies to LH email) for monitoring; we only need to be here 2 weeks but staying a few extra days as such a lovely hotel and want to be as relaxed as poss plus you never know how my body will respond so potentially could be longer anyway
So, all in all we spent about 450 pounds to see the doctor and for the meds. The doctor has given us a certificate to show airport security in this language and in English so that will be fine (we asked on the way out here and were told no problem) - I also have syringes too to take on board  :o

The nurse showed us to how draw up the medication and do the injection and she was lovely - hope we see her next time as it really makes a difference dealing with nurses/doctors who don't make you feel like a number or like they're too rushed to speak to you and who actually know your case history and bother to read the notes etc, sadly the only experience I've had with the UK NHS beginning to end from my GP through to fertility specialist team is awful  >:(

O.k, don't think there is anything else..... nope, that is it... I'll probably still post tomorrow anyhow to get down how the flight home went (medication wise) and how I get on with finding out about the LH test... (sorry to anyone reading this by the way as very long winded but conscious I want to record everything down as it is first time and a whole new world of information!!!) xxxx

Got back to the UK yesterday; main concern was getting through airport security well, needn't have worried!!!

We put the menopur in a clear sealable bag, which also contained the syringes and the certificate from doctor & pharmacy receipt... didn't say anything to them, just popped it in the tray and off it went, straight through the scanner and they didn't even have a look! Funnily enough, my hand luggage then got searched in particular a hairbrush of mine which they took out and put back through the scanner, all very bizare!  ^idiot^

So, the medication arrived safe and well and as we got home about 430, I went straight to the Doctors and actually spoke to a helpful receptionist (must be new, they'll soon knock that out of her!!  ;D ) - Doctor called me at home in the evening, ironically it was the very one who had only last month made snide comments about me having treatment abroad (as if I would do it if the NHS gave me what NICE say I should have!! grrr  >:( ) - explained to her the need to have a blood test on day 5 and need the results within 2 days, she's leaving the blood form at reception for me to collect this evening and have booked in the hospital for a test 13th.

Just got to wait for AF now then...

only a quick update & it'll be TMI (sorry!)...pinky spotting last night and brown today, usual af pain which I was surprised at as thought the pill would stop it! so taking today as day 1 although full on red flow yet to begin... wednesday's blood test should the be day 5 or 6 which is fine. Wait now for the blood test result and go ahead to start menopur.

grrr, just typed loads and PC locked!

o.k, basically GP's let me down big time yesterday when the result was ready and didn't return a call to spare me 30 seconds to share my LH result with me despite chasing them 3 times and being fobbed off each time with promises the call would definately come by the receptionists I was clearly inconveniencing!!  ^bigbad^

Long story short, called docs when they opened and let off a lot of steam after my sleepless night and my results are:

    • Day 5 LH = 1.1 IU/L
    • Day 5 FSH = 0.9 IU/L
Emailed my Consultant with the results who did a lot better than her UK counterparts responding within a couple of hours to start on the Menopur tomorrow evening!!! We fly out Tuesday 19th and have our next apt 20th at 9.20am...

Starting to feel very real now, very exciting and god, how I hope it works...please please please  ^pray^

So, I'll post after the first injection...should be an experience!!  ^eyes^

Done it!! was going to wait until 9pm but been looking forward to starting the menopur injections ended up injecting at 8pm.

I was worrying about getting all the air bubbles out of the mixture as I'm having to mix up 2 doses of Menopur using one liquid. Thankfully I remembered to change the mixing (large!) needle to the finer needle before I injected  ;D

I almost chickened out as started but just felt it would hurt too much; sadly DH didn't really want to do the injections unless he had to... 2nd go though and once the needle punctures the skin pushing it in didn't hurt at all, I thought the liquid would be easier to push in than it was but I may have been going far too slowly!

So, that's it - day 1 injecting done, onwards and upwards. Unless there are any notable side effects I'll next check in after going to clinic on 20th.

Good luck to anyone reading this who happens to be going through the same thing x

dear diary & anyone reading this...

so our flight was yesterday, short flight but such a long day... hotel fabulous, even got a double upgrade to delux business, fluffy slippers and robes too! We settled in to what will essentially be our home for the next couple of weeks; popped out to ensure we had a massive bottle of water, milk & pineapple juice (I bought the brazil nuts from home  ;D )

I was feeling anxious about the appointment as apart from some mega headaches over my eyes (alternating eyes each day  ^idiot^ ) and a couple of twinges in the abdominal area, I haven't noticed any side effects... have today finally stopped spotting though so that's good.

So, arrived at the clinc - early as always! - and went in on time literally for 10 minutes, the consultant is so lovely and always pleased to see us, I think she is amused by us "English folk" especially DH who loves to show off his language "skills"!! She scanned my ovaries/follicles which were where she'd expect them to be after 4 days injecting but from tonight I have to increase the menopur to 300 (currently on 150) - so that's 4 powers in 2 liquids. We're then back at the clinic on Saturday morning for another scan - by then I'd have been injecting for 7 days... hoping it won't be too much longer and we can get onto the egg collection, god I'll be nervous when it comes to that!!!  ^eyes^  guess the injecting is the easy part if ever there was an easy part to this process?!

Me & DH are going to venture out and about tomorrow - hopefully if it's dry we're going to a lovely park, the colours on the autumn trees are really pretty over here, if it's raining we'll be going shopping in the massive covered mall about 5 minutes walk from the hotel - uh oh, could prove budget busting!!  ;D

That's all for now, check in again after Saturday's appointment... small steps one at a time towards what could be the most incredible of achivements; here's hoping it's our turn this time  ^pray^

Should have updated my diary yesterday however, was not in a great place. We had our second scan (with a different doctor as it was a Saturday) and whilst scanning me said I hadn't responded well; 3 follies on left at 10mm (with smaller ones) & none on the right over 7.5mm, lining only 4mm - have to say, I was expecting much more having been injecting for 7 nights  :'(

Having checked when I started injecting, she didn't appear overly concerned but has increased the menopur to 375 iu (5 bottles, 2 liquids) for 2 nights.

I go back tomorrow for a blood test & further scan and she said we should be able to find out when egg collection will be.

Basically I spent yesterday crying, worrying, crying, worrying and poor DH had to try talking some positive sense into me!

So, that's where we are for now... will know more tomorrow but not until the afternoon... fingers crossed for a thicker lining and some more follies please  ^pray^ ^pray^ ^pray^

didn't have any side effects from upping the dosage of menopur; that just made me worry I wasn't responding or wasn't doing the injections correctly!!  ^idiot^

anyhow, we were at the clinic this morning for a blood test at 7:30 to check my Ostradiol levels and we'd get the results when we saw the Dr in the afternoon. nobody can ever manage to get blood from me without at least trying both arms and a hand! despite telling me I had small veins and getting me to clench my fists forever, they got it first time - horah!

scan was quicker than Saturday's and Dr said lining now 7mm (after loads of googling and searching on FF, seems thickness can measure 6 - 14mm, averaging 10/11mm in most people). I have 6 follies on left ovary at 12mm & 6 on the right at 10mm (again, after much research trying to reassure myself, follies have to get to 17/18mm)

the blood test was good I was told and I should now continue on the 375 dose for the next 3 nights and return for more bloods and scan on Thursday.

I asked about possible egg collection day and she says possibly Monday 1st...least it's not halloween!  ;D

so, disappointed things aren't moving quicker as had expected to have bigger follies sooner but relieved the increased dosage has had an effect.

next post after Thursday's scan. xx

    dear diary,

when we have a clinic day, we have to get to the clinic between 7:30 & 10am for a blood test in order that when we attend later that afternoon for the scan, the dr has the results.

we headed out this morning and were back in the hotel after an hour round trip; just in time to make it to breakfast  ;)

sadly, the run of luck I'd had with the nurses being able to draw blood first attempt had run out this morning and we're back to the both arms & hands approach of the UK  :(

as with each of the previous appointments, I was so worried about this one - DH says things like "what will be will be, it's pointless worrying"... "if things don't go our way, we'll face it & move forward together, it won't beat us" - why can't I be like him rather than think of all the things we don't want to happen that could bring our dream to an end  ^idiot^

in fact, I needn't have worried - upon entering the room, the dr joyously exclaimed tht ec & et would be Tues & Thurs next week! (She'd already reviewed my bloods; I am still finding it refreshing at not having to furnish my (NHS) consultant with my case history & his last advices from the previous appointment whilst he skim reads my notes all whilst making me feel like I'm a major inconvenience in his busy schedule  ^bigbad^ ). Scan showed biggest follies are now 16mm (they were 12mm 3 days ago) so, 2 more doses of 375 iu Menopur for this evening & tomorrow then back to clinic for bloods/scan on saturday for confirmation of planned ec.The Menopur is working out at 100 per injection at the moment as I'm on 5 bottles/2 liquids per night.

in terms of how I'm feeling in myself; still really tired, fuzzy headache & dizzy today, swollen & tender abdomen, you'd have to ask DH how ratty/teary I've been  ;D . Did have ewcm yesterday and then kinda white opaque/ewcm today (TMI). My skin is really clear on the plus side, could be the caffeine I have given up and veggies I'm munching? I can't fit comfortably into my jeans though - could be the hotel living though  ;)

anyway, day to ourselves tomorrow where I shall hibernate to max out the egg growth before saturday's all to important scan. we're tantalisingly close to the ec objective of down regging & stimming but I'm all too aware of the remaining hurdles we need to leap before we face the fresh ones of the 2ww.  To anyone reading this on the same journey, good luck to you & to me and my DH too xxxx
