Some Basic Netiquette

Netiquette is a term coined from the combination of the word “net” (meaning the internet) and etiquette.  As in real life, in a  cyberspace community there are certain “unwritten rules” about what is and isn't socially acceptable. Knowing and understanding what is/isn't can help you go a long way to getting the best from any forum or website and Fertility Friends.

 - Before starting a new thread, try doing a search for similar topics.

 - When starting a new thread, try and title the thread so it is obvious what the content is.

 - Post as much information as you can about your query/requirement in the thread, but don’t make it so long that people give up reading it (and if it is long, simple things like a blank line between paragraphs can make it more readable).

 - Don’t use text typing or too many abbreviations/too much jargon in posts . A lot of members simply don’t understand it and click away without even bothering to read. This then limits the support you will receive.

- If you don’t understand something someone else has posted, don’t be afraid to ask for an explanation. There’s no such thing as a stupid question!

 - Try and avoid one liners and just clogging otherwise serious threads up with silliness. While the release of tension can be fun, it makes the threads difficult for members seeking real support to find that which they need. If you find yourself having on line conversations with others on here (for example, for a bit of fun) take it to the Chat Room.

 - Try and stay on topic. If you find yourself veering off course, start a new thread instead.

 - Respect that we all come here from vastly different backgrounds and with different perceptions; no one person’s opinion /methods are right or wrong so do not judge.

 - Understand that communicating via electronic means is limiting and intent can sometimes be misread.

 - Never post in anger or as a knee-jerk reaction; if you find a post that invokes a strong reaction in you, it is always best to walk away and think about how you wish to respond rather than immediately hitting the reply button and ranting.

 - Should you feel a post has been made that is inflammatory or inappropriate, please do not get into a debate with the member about it. Report the post to the Volunteer using the function provided (bottom right of every post).
