Only 1 follicle at day 8 scan, cycle cancelled :(

Hi,

I've just posted this on over 40's thread then thought it may be better here.
Sorry for the duplicate posts!

Just had my day 8 scan and there is only one follicle responding. It's 16mm. There are another two but they are only 6mm in size and I'm told won't catch up, or if they do the other one will be over ripe. It's the clinic's policy only to go ahead with 3 follies anyway.

So only 8 days in my cycle has been cancelled and I'm gutted  :'(

They are converting to IUI but I'm not feeling very hopeful as there is nothing to suggest there is a problem with sperm meeting egg every month when we try naturally! Hence the IVF route!Although there will be a follow up consultation the clinic have said we probably won't be offered another go at IVF due to the poor response. I was on a short flare protocol and on the clinic's highest dose of 300iui Menopur.

My other half hasn't mentioned it since we left the clinic so it was a long 2 hours drive back!

I don't feel I've even had a proper chance and the lack of chat from DP would suggest there is nothing else he wants to happen?

Anyone else had a poor response and converted to IUI?

Thanks

Hi t-73; I'm a poor responder too (and over 40); currently cycling on day 11; yesterday's scans showed one follicle at almost 15mm and only a few tiny tiny other ones (less than 3mm).. i've been on fostimon/merional max doses daily (which is 600IU), cetrotide, clomid and viagra (plus other drugs for immune issues), to encourage my lone one along, and hopefully let the others catch up a bit.  My clinic is still quite hopeful, though i'll be stimming much longer than everyone around me seems to be.  It only takes one egg, so I think it's really just your clinic's policy.

Personally, I was given the IUI option (as i wasn't sure i wanted to do IVF; it's secondary infertility), and the dr said it was only going to increase our chances by a couple of percent if we did IUI.  I also don't think there's any problems with our sperm/egg meeting, so couldn't see the value in doing it at all!

Are you able to cycle somewhere with a better policy?  If yo're only on 300 menopur there's also places that will increase the drug levels, if needed, but you'll need more monitoring probably.

Thanks for the reply mummy,

We were given one shot at NHS funded IVF so that's why we ended up at that clinic. It's so frustrating knowing other clinics may have given me an different dose or given us the option to continue. They said in 30 years they have never had a pregnancy from less than 3 follicles. Says more about them I think.

Now DP has heard the clinic say IVF no longer an option I doubt he'll take my word that other clinics will have different views. Especially now we would have to self fund.
Good luck with your treatment and like you say it only takes one good egg.

X

Hi T_73,
I'm afraid that it seems that a lot of clinics do have similar issues as you; I can only really speak for my experience - which is at ARGC.  Their birth rates are much higher, but their monitoring, their drugs, everything is much more focused to the individual, and there is no 'one size fits all'.  Of course, it's not cheap to pay for all that monitoring, but if you find yourselves looking, one expensive positive ivf is a lot cheaper than several 'cheap' failed ones ....

having said all that; you've got one follicle, which is all you need!  best of luck with the IUI. ^pray^

Hi

Thats what happened to me during my IVF, I produced one follicle size 15 mm and they cancelled my treatment. My world collapsed :'( , I understand how you feel. They told me to try naturally after giving me the pregnyl, but that didnt work. My cycle was cancelled and they wanted me to have another go with higher dosage. I didnt want to go with higher dosage as I felt like an experiment and decided to go with IUI instead. If they cancelled your treatment this also mean you can have another go.

have you tried looking abroad? A lot of ladies go to Greece who are poor responder, treatment is cheaper and better and many get pregnant. I went to Denmark because of the sperm bank and did IUI with donor sperm instead of carrying with IVF. I am a mother of two boys (twins) first time with IUI, a miracle for me and my husband.

Dont lose hope...first time is trial and see how you respond to drugs. my advice please dont accept their answer and move on possible to another clinic. I believe most clinic have their own statistics and looks better for them if people become pregnant so they rather say " it wont work" than risk a failure. My clinic in Denmark was very small (nice and clean) and thats where I will have my treatment rather than "big names companies"...if that makes sense.

I hope my story brings you hope...dont lose it. Do read my diary, if you can. I share a lot of my feelings about how disappointed I felt and how I took charge of my destiny. You can do it too!

Keep going!

Good Luck

Hope x

Hi T-73,
I'm just back from egg collection, and i thought i'd let you know that despite us having similar day 8 scans, i've just collected 10 eggs.  There really is hope if you find the right clinic!  ... I should say, though, that I was on a lot of fostimon/merional and stimmed for 15 days, but they changed it each day to control my blood hormone levels... it was full on!

hope the iui goes well!  ^reiki^
