Hi all,

Poppy delighted to hear your appt with the endocrinologist went well!! That all sounds so positive. I had never heard of metformin in IVF but had a quick read of your post this morn and after doing a bit of research there is so much info out there suggesting that low dose metformin improves pregnancy rates especially after repeated failures probably by decreasing insulin resistance!!! It is crazy to me that I'd never heard this before. It really goes to show how getting opinions from different specialists related to infertility can help. I'm so happy for you that you found someone good. Seems like he took a genuine interest in your difficulties. I'm not due an appt with my endo but may see her before our next cycle and if I do I'm going to ask her if it may benefit me. Delighted for you and thanks for that info.

Cortisol levels. I can't remember when I last had them tested. Ya know yourself your having such an array of blood tests it's hard to keep track. I'm going to get mine done now too. It's a cheap blood test and every little thing helps. Your a wealth of info Poppy thanks  ;)

I bet being on thyroxine will really help your weight loss. If you had even a small underlying underactive thyroid it would be next to impossible to loose weight. Here's hoping!! When I had thyroid issues it was overactive eventhough I didn't have a single symptom and it only showed up in blood results. Looking back I was quite thin then (which would make sense as overactive speeds up your metabolism). I don't wish an overactive thyroid on myself again or anything but I've defo put on weight since this whole IVF journey began!! All the hormones and steroids makes you completely bloated and I can't be bothered trying to loose weight between cycles. I keep thinking whats the point I'm just gonna pile it on again  ;D I'm still at a happy BMI but I think it's time to start some workouts and skip the "woe is me" binge eating of choccies and cakes!! Sometimes you have to treat yourself though. Especially after constant disappointment.

I know the pricing for PGS is beyond mad!! I totally see how your opting for it though. Poppy I'll be praying so hard that at least one or two of your little embies come out perfect!! I really will!! I know it would be such a hard decision to go down the road of double embryo but your not alone. We can only go so many times further before having to consider that too. I hope we both don't have to venture down that path but if we do...that'll be ok too!! We've managed to come this far..I don't think anything would put us off our dream now. I'm still secretly praying none of us have to go there though!! ^pray^

And as for the hysto if you don't feel you need it,there is no one in a better situation than yourself to know what you need and perhaps could do without. I totally get it!!

As for me I am stuck to the laptop researching whether or not to consider changing clinics. I really really don't want to!! An addition I was hoping for on our next donor cycle would be an ERA. I know lots of women who've had them and had success afterwards. They found out they were pre or post receptive and after altering their days of progesterone it worked!! The prob is our Doc in VH is against it. He doesn't feel their is enough research to prove it makes a difference. I was chatting to a girl who attends IVF Spain and she said ERA's are standard there. It's soooo confusing!! Also we had 4 days of cyclogest on our first cycle (when I did get pregnant) but 5 days on the second when I didn't. When I asked the doc in our Skype why.. he said the days of progesterone don't really matter. Ah I'm so stuck because I do love our Doc and really trust him but there is so much evidence that says the number of days on progesterone pre-transfer really does matter!! I'm still up in the air re staying with the clinic Poppy but need to make a decision soon. Like I said, I really don't want to change!! Have you ever had an ERA pre-transfer or have heard any stories on it?

Anyway, hope all goes well for you on thyroxine. I'm sure it will. I've never heard any probs. Keep me posted xx

Firefly you must be in Alicante at this point. Hope everything is going really well with your protocol. So excited for you and have everything crossed xx

Chat soon everyone x

Just a quick one to say we arrived in Alicante last night after a very long journey! Very happy to be here and Bazan 16 is perfect, thank you Poppy!

We have a day to relax and recover from the journey and have our 8 day scan tomorrow. Fingers crossed there are a few good looking follies!

Had my first scan this morning (day 8), the Dr said my endometrium looked great and is at 8.3mm. He could see 8 follicles all around 13-15mm, in my previous cycles I had 14 eggs collected so a little lower than I had hoped but I am a bit older and hoping it is quality over quantity!! Next scan is on Monday and hopefully egg collection on Wednesday.

Anyone got some good suggestions to keep my husband and I busy over the weekend?

    Hi everyone,

Hey Firefly just posting a quick note to say congrats on your day 8 scan!! I think 8.3mm for day 8 sounds really positive!! I know your hoping for the same retrieval as before but you never know it may increase by your next scan on Monday. As always I have everything crossed for you!! :) Plus you are so right..it is quality over quantity and all you need is one good emby!!

I'm trying to think if I can suggest anything for yourself and your hubby over the wknd. We're useless...anytime we've been we didn't stay super long and probably the only time we stayed 10 days (for our first consultation) the sun was splitting the trees so it was all about lounging in the sun good food and lazy evening walks. First real holiday where we had nothing to do in years so we took full advantage and were totally lazy  ;D

Maybe see if their are any shows on in the local theatres? A boat excursion? Perhaps rent a car for the wknd and get lost in the Alicante hills? I'd love that...lol...Sorry I don't have more info but I do advise just chill and enjoy yourselves.

Very best of luck on Monday and keep us posted xx

Poppy hope all's well with you. Wrote a reply to you earlier. Hope all's going well on the thyroxine xx

Chat soon guys. Be thinking of you Firefly xx

    Hi ladies

Firefly I am glad you got to Alicante ok and you like the apartment. Great news on your first scan, it sounds promising. As to the number of follicles, 8 sounds good to me. You had 14 eggs collected before but how many of them developed into embryos and became blatocysts? From what I have read, less stimulation and fewer eggs is better as it often correlates with better quality. If you end up with 8 eggs and most of those fertilise that will be a pretty good result.

As to what to do in Alicante, we usually just relax too and don't do too much. However my husband went up to the castle one day and enjoyed it. And there is a museum in town as well. Beyond that I would just say walking around the town, walks by the beach, and hanging out in cafes and restaurants. And they do have Netflix in the apartment as well. The main thing is to relax and stay positive. Seems like things are on track so far.

Jenny, thanks for your thoughts on things with me. I am feeling positive about the medication. Not sure if its just in my head, but I do feel as though my energy has already picked up a little too. I had to be up early this morning and I didn't have my usual tiredness and grogginess like I normally do in the morning and am feeling just a little more alert generally.

I had my cortisol test this morning too so let's see what comes from that. Note: if you are considering having one yourself, you may already know to do this but my consultant gave me a suppression test as he said it's by far the most accurate. I think you would only need one based on experiencing symptoms which could suggest there is a problem though.

As to your situation Jenny, it's hard deciding what to do I know. Re IVF Spain, I don't know if you have talked to them but my impression was to steer clear when I met with them at the Fertility Show a few years ago. We had a free consultation with one of the doctors there and though they clearly seemed to know their stuff, it felt to me like it was a big machine, expensive, and also that there were lots of add on costs so it was unclear how much things were going to cost overall. And they seemed to want to encourage you to do lots of extras which just felt a bit commercial to me and like upselling. That was just my personal experience from meeting them. I know lots of people have positive experiences there and positive outcomes, but we came away feeling that it wasn't for us.

One of the things I liked about Vistahermosa is the small size of the team and the fact they are part of a hospital and are linked to a university and they are involved in a lot of research. I guess this means they are maybe a bit more cautious than some other clinics, but it does also make me trust that what they are doing is grounded in good practice. And I don't feel they try to upsell or make extra money from you.

Though what you said about that new lady and the prescriptions etc sounded a bit worrying. Hopefully that's just a case of early days and her getting adjusted and not wanting to look like she has made a mistake. Though it would be much better to just own it and apologise.

Anyway, I am not trying to convince you to remain with VH but if you do stay with them I imagine you can still do additional things that aren't part of their treatment protocol if that's what you believe is best for you. They may not agree with it but I imagine they will work in with it unless they perceive it as risky. Like if you decide to have the ERA test and you want to use the results from that to help plan your next cycle, I imagine they will go along with it if that's what you want.

I haven't had the ERA done myself but I thought it was only relevant to having an FET? If so, I haven't ever been in a position to have an FET before now as never had any frozen embryos left after a cycle. However I have read mixed things about it when looking at results from studies. My impression was that it was more for people who have implantation problems and have only had chemical pregnancies or no pregnancies at all from transfers? But I could be wrong. Like so much of this I think you have to go with your gut feeling as to what is right for you.

And maybe it would be worth visiting a couple of other clinics to talk to them if you are very undecided. That may help you to make up your mind. If you did change are you still focusing on Spain or have you thoughts to go elsewhere entirely?

    Dear Firefly

I can suggest you to spend one of your dinners or aperitivo at Bar Manero, my fav in town! You can have real terrific Spanish “comida” and “tapas” there!
If you have time you can also take the train or rent a car to visit Valencia, Murcia, Albacete or Elche. Otherwise just take a bus to the beach ofSan Juan and go back by feet...
Enjoy the beach and the Spanish sun and all the best🤞🏻🤞🏻

Thank you all for your suggestions and words of support. We have got egg collection booked in for Wednesday! 6 follicles looking very good with another couple which might come by Wednesday. I am used to having slightly higher numbers to play with but they say they are going for the quality not quantity! When I had 15 eggs collected the first time only 3 made it to day 5 and not that great quality, the next time I had 14 eggs collected with 4 making it to day 5, all good quality but still none of these have resulted in a successful pregnancy so fingers crossed less is more in our case!!!

    Hi Girls,

I am recovering from egg collection and having Intralipids. So we got 4 mature eggs which I am a little disappointed with but I am just hoping they know what they are doing and they are good quality. They are using ICSI to fertilise which is new to us as we have previously just done straight IVF. I am staying in overnight so they will let us know how many fertilised in the morning.

I can’t help thinking how on earth we have gone from collecting 14 eggs this time last year to just 4 now but crossing all my fingers they progress well! I am confident the team know what they are doing and we only need one after all.

Trying not to worry but the next few days will be a bit of an anxious time!

Thanks for thinking of me and it is nice to know you guys are there!
