hi everyone

Im thinking of booking a private scan, but which one is the best 3d or 4d has anyone had any experience of these scans and also can you tell if baby has any defects with one of these scans, and would they tell you if they found anything or is it just purely for getting a photo of your baby.I just cant wait to see what my baby looks like  ::) im so impatient

many thanks

Hiya

To the best of my knowledge 3d and 4d scans are the same except 3d is the still photograph and 4d is the moving image! You should get photo's and a dvd when you go as we did!
I would definitely recommend getting it done! Its so nice to see what baby looks like!

I was also wondering if they can see any deformities.. I keep lookiing at the photo and asking DH if he thinks it looks ok!!

Yup - I think Vickey has it right.

Whenever we've had them done (lucky for us our hospital often lets us have a quick peek in 4D after the regular sonogram's been done :)) we always ask loads of questions and I don't think they've found a robust diagnostic use for the 3d/4d imaging yet... regular utrasound is still king on that front.

However, speaking with Frank (our fave sonographer) the last time he reckoned about the only thing it might do is pick up any visible sign of deformity (e.g. Downs or cleft palate etc) but so much depends on how good the technician and equipment is.  For instance our Bubs looks like he has a Shrek ear in one of the pics we have but it's not there in any of the others!  In a nutshell, there can very often be weird looking features purely as an artifact of the technique... a few girls on the 3rd tri thread have been asking about oversized noses and I think that is one prime example of how the image can be distorted and give you a panic!

I'd defs say go for it if you want one and have the spare loot to pay for it (bearing in mind they can't always get a good pic), but only with a view to seeing your bubba bean and not for any kind of analysis.  It's certainly incredible to see their little faces and lips etc knowing they're still in your tum.  :) :)

A lot of the 3/4D scans are for 'fun' rather than reassurance and they don't actually do any checks - probably best to ask when you book.

Trip - It's unlikely they'd pick up a cleft palate as that is the roof of the mouth but I'm sure a hairlip should show up. I had an extra scan when pg with ds with the fetal abnormalities specialist specifically to look for cleft palate, but even he said they can't really tell as it's in the mouth.

Completely agree they are worth doing if you can justify the expense.
