hi lucy,

as long as your acupuncturist knows you are having treatment and is experienced in treating patients for fertility then it's perfectly safe to continue.  he or she will know which points are safe to use at different times during your treatment.  most people would be treated during their two weeks of stimms, either once or twice and then it's common to be treated on the day of et (either before & after et or just after).  acupuncturists will not usually treat in the seven days following et but will then begin again from 8 days on.

hope this helps.

good luck with your tx!  ^goodluck^

Hi

Does your acupuncturist have sound experience working with ladies who have fertility issues and/or are going through treatment ?  If so then you shouldn't have any problems.

You need to ensure they know exactly where you are in your treatment cycle and also keep them up to date with any information you feel would be useful ie I've always informed my acupuncturist how many follicles I have after each stimming scan, the thickness of womb lining, any side effects from drugs etc as this will help them when deciding what form of acupuncture treatment each session ie where to put needles...and the placement of needles throughout the whole treatment cycle up until ET will vary from woman to woman, cycle to cycle, session to session.

When it comes to ET, there is a very specific protocol that they should adhere to (many use the German protocol) and this should not vary.  Ideally you should have a session just before and just after ET....maximum of around 24 hours either side.

Some acupuncturists will continue sessions through 2ww but again, they must have experience as in Chinese Medicine, dampness and "phlegm" are seen as contributary to infertility or "cold womb".....but a foetus is also seen as damp and "phlegm" so need to ensure they know exactly what they're looking for and what they're doing as wouldn't want to try and get rid of damp/phlegm believing it to be cold womb when it's actually implanting embryo.

I've not had acupunture for several months now...not since our 3rd unsuccessful fresh IVF in October last year.  I'd been having regular acu since summer 2005 whilst ttc naturally and also whilst taking clomid to boost (release more eggs as ovulate naturally).  I didn't have acu through our first fresh IVF in March 2006 but I did have it all the way through 2 natural FETs in 2006 and through 2 more fresh IVFs in 2007....I didn't have it through our more recent (4th) fresh IVF.

My acupuncturist isn't a specialist in IVF/fertility issues but he does teach acu and TCM at degree level and has taken up to date courses re IVF etc so he knows what he's doing.

Acupuncture hasn't been successful for us but it certainly relaxed and destressed me through treatment.  I've always ensured that I start having weekly sessions around 2-3 months before starting the IVF/FET and then continued it all the way through the whole cycle on a weekly basis.  On day of ET I always have had sessions just before and just after the transfer....and then again at around 7dpt in 2ww.  We've not had a BFP that stayed but both FETs resulted in chemical pregnancies.

If you have any questions then do discuss them with your acupuncturist and ensure they and you are completely clear on what and why they are doing things.

Good luck
Natasha

Thanks for the replys girls.
My acupuncturist is seeing around 7-8 women per wk mainly doing IVF some just TTC. She does know what shes doing but i feel wary doing it before and after Embryo Transfer for some reason? I thought I'd do the last one just after egg collection, so she could help prepare the womb for the embryo??? am all confused (doesnt take much)!!
My nerves are gone, i dont want anything to stop it working this time, i couldnt cope.

Just to say I'm with an acupuncturist who specialises in fertility and I have had it every week all through treatment and even now continue weekly post BFP. Hoping it can help sustain the pregnancy.
