I have heard that it can be difficult to detect all the 'necessary bits' on an early scan, and often can't get a heartbeat until 8 weeks. I wouldn't lose hope yet, but wait and see what the next scan tells you.
I was lucky - I had a scan at 6 weeks and could see the fluttering of a tiny heart but I know not everyone gets this and it doesn't necessarily mean it's bad news.
