blood in babys urine - not UTI??

Hi,

I was wondering if you could give me some advice.

Last week my baby girl (1yr) had significant amounts of blood in nappy / urine. She was taken to casualty as the drs was closed for the day. They admitted her overnight, tested urine and blood and did an exam. The tests came back negative, although initial urine tests showed raised white blood cells (leukocytes). Child protection issues were also ruled out. The experience was awful, not just because of the concern for my daughter, but also the questioning which they apologised for later when examine / results came back fine.

We go back on Wednesday and see a doctor I met that night. I feel very nervous because of the past experience even though we haven't done anything wrong, but even more so as I don't want it to be brushed aside as just one of those things when something could be wrong. During the stay in hospital the doctor did mention issues with the kidneys. Given the first set of bloods and uring came back mostly normal (urine cultures and analysis and bloods) apart from slightly raised leukocytes, I don't know what to ask or further investigations taken. I am scared that it could happen again and something serious be wrong.

Is there any advice you can give before I go??
Thanks
Charly

Hi Charly,

That all sounds like a horrible experience and I can understand why you are upset.  Given what you have told me I would think that an ultrsound scan of her kidneys/ urinary tract and/ or a scan that is done after injecting a dye (so that structures are shown more clearly) would be the next steps.

Good luck, Car
