i went to a fertility specialist today as decided to get my tubes checked. had a cycle monitored by argc in dec and all ok with me re hormones etc. i am on day 29 of irregular cycle. the dr said that there was very little activity - he couldn't see any follicles - and one ovary was unseen in scan. well none of this i was told of when i had scans at argc! why aren't there any follicles? argc would've picked up on this surely - or might it vary month to month. i am confused as he said it could be because i have only just ovulated? well i thought i had an lh surge on  day 15 - but maybe i mis-read the predictor stick?! If i was right my period should be due today-tomorrow - but he said there is no sign of a period! i feel very confused now!!
he said he can't tell from a scan so early in this cycle as to whether i am pregnant....
he said he might consider low dose clomid to stimulate activity - but if i am ovulating then why no activity showing...?
it also cost £400 so am smarting a little bit....
thanks again!!

Hi Eva

I'm not a fertility nurse.....

Ovulation prediction test can be unreliable. He presumably knew it was unlikely to bleed given your womb lining size.  If I were in your shoes I would call him up and politely explain that you are more confused now than when you went to see him and ask him to expain it again.  Get the notepaper and pen ready!  On the other hand it may just be worth a test next week!

Good luck

Hi Lolly, thanks! Even if I am on my long cycle (35 days) then i only have a week to go so should there therefore be follicles showing in the scan? If I was pregnant (v long shot i know) then would there be follicles still showing...and would the womb lining remain unchanged? Yes, will drop them an email i think!
Hoping that you are having a healthy and happy pregnancy! Eva xx

Eva am I right in thinking that you are not on any drug treatment?
because if so you would be ovulating as a "normal" woman so you would only be getting one ovary with a ripe follie to release, and if he did not even see your other ovary then it could have been that side whose turn it is this month,
sorry if I am not understanding or being a bit thick but just thought I would mention it...I am not medically trained!

Hi Dydie!
Yes - you are right - i am on no drug treatment - am bms naturally!!
I have just had a look at a basic explanation of a womans reproductive system as evidently i know nothing - and i think maybe i mis-heard. it was only an internal examination - would he be able to see the follicle/s? he seemed to know which ovary had released an egg this month though - and i think he gave me an explanation about why one was more difficult to see - probably the same as you said Dydie. I still don't understand why he is saying there should be 'more activity' though - if one follicle is the norm. I did ask him and I think he said you can have a number of follicles stimulated but only the one most ready would release - but that you should be able to see them... or something like that...?? Feel like i really should've asked more questions.

Hi Eva
Yes you can have more than one follie and like you say whichever is more mature will release, and some of them are empty, he would normally be able to see the follies and can also measure them etc, but sometimes these things can be very evasive on scans, I am still not sure if he was looking at the correct ovary myself, but I must admit I don't really understand what he is trying to say either....don't be embarressed, phone him up and just say you were in a bit of a tiz and did not really understand what he had said, if he has not got time ask him to confirm everything in a letter, after all you have paid £400. you should have come away with more answers.
Good Luck, keep us posted

Dydie - if the Dr is saying that 'there is no sign of your period being on its way' what sign do they get that it is? and how long how long from the initial signs that period is on its way to actually starting would it take?
sorry i know ur not a fertility specialist - just wondered if you knew!
thanks

Hi Eva

sorry I don't know, I would imagine its to do with the uterine lining thickness or something but I am sure someone else may be able to help, if no one is answering try posting the same question in one of the other threads like "inbetween treatment" or "diagnosis"
did you ask your clinic to confirm everything in writing?
good luck
