I thought getting pregnant would be the hard part not finding a clinic!  I am 51 my husband is 35 and we need donor eggs with a short waiting list. Will travel to the moon if necessary, but hopefully not! So many countries have set a limit of 50 yrs which I have just missed by 3 mths.........such is life.

I am so happy to have found your site, it is truly fantastic.  I have both cried and laughed as I've read you entries.  You give me great courage. Thank you and the very best wishes to you all on your personal journeys.

So any recommendations would be very much appreciated.................

Hi Fola,

You have limited choices I think. Firstly, you can find a UK clinic that will accept your age group but as you say you will have a waiting list. Secondly, you can go abroad either via a UK clinic (more expensive) or directly to a Euro clinic. Please bear in mind though that European clinics will be anonymous donations and this may be an issue for you and your child as they will have very little information on the donor. However, I believe personally that this should still not preclude the child knowing everything about their conception despite a lack of information. These are issues that came up for me when I had my children via embryo donation in Spain (age 46). I would really recommend the IVI or IM Spanish clinics but I am not sure of their age cut off...

You may want to investigate the Logan Centre as they do both UK and Euro donation. The Bridge in London also does this. This is very expensive but they organise everything for you (travel etc etc). They use European donors in clincs in Greece for example, but will cost you at least £8-10,000 for one go. This option is only if you feel you cannot organise this yourself.

If you could afford it I personally would recommend you going to the USA as they have the best success rates in the world and you can have a known donor if desired as well. They also have clinics who will treat over 50s.

You may find you have more detailed responses from women on the international boards and also the threads for individual clinics. You may also want to post on the donor egg board for more information. Here are some links.

Here is a link for the Czech Republic thread - you may find that clinics like Reprofit and Repromeda have a higher age limit:

A lady called baby crazy (Karen) has recently had her DE baby at age 51/52 at Repromeda and you may like to talk to her more about this..

Finally, the over 40s board

It is worth several posts on these threads to garner information as there will be women who have lots of knowledge about the European clinics and their age cut offs.

In the meantime, while you are researching, I would try and get into as good a shape in preparation for your cycle as possible e.g. check out things like thyroid - is it ok, insulin resistance, start a good prenatal vitamin and some extra folic acid etc etc.

You will hopefully be offered further testing as you progress, but I would also make sure your uterus is in good shape (no fibroids e.g.) etc etc. If you can, you may also want to investigate things like clotting issues etc. I found out too late that I had these issues and suffered several miscarriages in my 40s including donor egg pregnancies. Donor eggs will not work if you or your DH have any other systemic issues.

Sorry to bombard you with info. but you really need to hit the ground running as time is a factor for you unfortunately.

In Summary - if you can afford the US I would choose that but the most likely places at the moment for over 50s would appear to be Eastern European clinics.

Wishing you the best of luck,

Daisy

I will certainly follow up on those sites you sent me and I will let you know how I get on.  It is all very bewildering - the terminology, the pitfalls, the options.  Friends tell me not to be obsessive but it is hard not to be at my age - it's all I think about.  If I can find a clinic at least I will feel I have my foot on the first rung of the ladder.  Spain Greece Israel Norway France are all out because of my age.  I am looking in to clinics in the Ukraine and Russia - America is an interesting option I will look there.  Thanks again, Fola

Hi Fola,

I agree - this is very hard and very confusing, but as you say, finding a clinic will be the important first step for you.

Regarding the US clinics - you may want to post on the US board 'Looking to be a Mom thru Egg Donation as they have several 50 plus women who are cycling now and quite a few who are already mums through donor eggs at over 50. They will recommend relevant clinics and let you know costs etc.

I would recommend you look at the Czech Republic board as well. As I mentioned, baby crazy went to Sanatorium Repromeda at over 50 years old and has just had a baby. Also look at Reprofit.
