Hi I have just been diagnosed with PCOS after a vaginal probe scan showed on one ovary the pearl like sturctures and one cyst on the other.  My GP has put me on Dianette and says all should be fine - I am so scared.  She says the Dianette will make my periods return then next year I should be able to start trying for a baby, if after 6 months I cannot become pregnant that she'll refer me for fretility treatment - does all this sound right?  I'm sick with worry and cry myself to sleep each night.  I feel so alone and feel my fiance will leave me as he wants kids as much as me.

Hi Nikki

I am sorry that I cannot help you with the medical stuff but I wanted to send you a hug as I can understand how scared you are about it all.

PCO are not the end of the world and some ladies manage to get pregnant without tx, others may need some help to achieve their dream.  I am not going to make any promises.

I think you need to talk to your fiance about this as he probably will be able to reassure you that it is you that he wants children with and not someone else.  Remember he has decided its you he wants to marry and spend his life with.

Take care

I just wanted to say please don't worry!! PCOS can be controlled quite well.

When I was diagnosed my specialist put me on Metformin and it sorted out all my symptoms, I was ovulating and having regular cycles.  I really didn't know I had it in fact!  Maybe it wouldn't work for everyone but it certainly did the trick for me.

The reason for my fertility problems was nothing to do with PCO so I can't say if I'd successfully have conceived otherwise.  But tons and tons of  PCO patients have kids with few if any problems.

Please try not to worry, docs are getting much better at understanding PCO and it really shouldn't stop you having kids.

There's also a book by someone called Collette Harris which covers plenty of self help and natural remedies for PCO.

Good luck .

:) Thanks so much guys for replying, looking round the site and reading your replies yesterday has made me feel a bit stronger, I actually didn't cry myself to sleep.

I'm feeling a bit strange on the Dianette but thats normal for starting a med and I do feel stronger I guess for me personally the glass is always half empty and sods law is always against me so I'm thinking the worst.  I'll have bad days I guess and good days but its just a waiting game isn't it, not going to know if I can consieve till early next year when we start trying (plan to start trying April and marry on June 11th).

I know Martyn still wants me I just hate the thought of not being able to give him what he wants but as I said only time will tell.

Just freaked out really as GP saw scan results and prescribed me Dianette and that was it - assumed I'd be referred on to see a gynaecologists! Also a bit freaked as no one else seems to be on Dianette!

Anyways feeling slightly stronger today and thanks for replying.  I am so glad I found this site.

Hi Nikki

You talk about no one being on Dianette.  I think this is because most people here are trying to concieve and Dianette is a contraceptive isn't it?  I guess if you are not trying for a baby now they will not refer you to a gynaecologist until you want treatment for trying to concieve.  This is what happened to me.

When I was ready to concieve I was put on Metformin first (which regulated my cycle within two months) and then they added Clomid a few months later.

Hey there have just been diagnosed with PCO too and am going to be prescribed Metaformin (maybe you should ask your dr?about it)
I was on Dianette for 6 yrs as i had acne as a teenager and it deals with that as well as a contraceptive i have been told to only take it three months at a time as you have a slight increased chance of having a blood clot?? (don't worry though i had it 6 yrs and i'm fine).
The pcos thread on here is good it tells you about the symptoms and the solutions maybe look at it and print the page out and take it to the dr and ask why they're prescribing dianette rather than metaformin (i think dr's usually prescribe clomid and metaformin as the clomid makes you ovulate but some dr's who don't have fertility knowledge may not know about it so it's worth researching about it and going back to the dr for a 2nd opinion. If you fancy a little chatter you can always send me a message,
I ahve been told i probably haqve pco rather than pcos (if u have pcos you are usually a little hairy, have acne are overweight and don't ovulate)there are things you can do to control pco/s if you want to

Going to GP tomorrow as on Dianette have had terrible full blown migraines, will ask GP about Metaformin.  One of my friends has just announced she's 3 months pregnant - so happy for her but feels like its getting to the time where everyone we know is falling pregnant and what if I can't.  I know I'm jumping to conclusions but just wish life was simple - I know it never is though!  I'm doing ok.

Good luck with your GP visit.  It may be worth taking some literature with you to show the GP in case they are not up to speed with current PCO(S) and fertility stuff.  My GP flatly refused to prescribe metformin as she said I wasn't diabetic so couldn't have it (it is only actually licensed for use with diabetes I think).  I have since seen a consultant and he has prescribed metformin and clomid  :) subject to DH's sperm results (haven't got that far yet as only saw him last week).  Whilst I have the greatest respect for the medical profession I do think that at times they forget about the heartache and frustration their patients are suffering!

Def going to mention all this, GP prescribed me Dianette to regulate my periods as not had one for 4 months and I think she wanted me to get my cycle working again ready for after Xmas when we start ttc but then again I don't hav ethe most hope in my GP (best of a bad bunch I guess) as all GP surgerys in area are solid!
