Hi Ladies,

Rather than trawl thu sites on the net I thought I would ask you wise owls what the difference is between IUI and IVF. Sure you will give me a nice simple explanation  ;D

I am due to see fertility specialist soon as not ovulating all the time.

Any replies gratefully recieved. Sorry if i'm being a bit dippy here  :-[

hi jo

a short answer to your question, with iui the introduce the sperm directly into the womb with ivf they harvest your eggs and introduce the sperm watch them to see how many fertilise and become embryos then they replace the embryos in to the womb. hope this answers your question

Jo..I have had 6 iui's and moved to ivf this month..
The only real difference in the treatment side is that you have to have more blood tests, check ups and a few more scans.

You also start on d22 of your cycle (if u have a reg cycle) and have down regging drugs..either sniffed or injected..Then when you get your period..

Day 1 you start having stimming injections to make follicles grow..from there on they scan you and when the follicles are the right size and number etc (like iui) they do egg collection..Either by using a heavy sedative or General Anaesthetic, your  partner then gives a sperm sample..or they unfreeze one if frozen and they put sperm and eggs into a dish, you then wait for the sperm to fertilise the egg and then they replace the embryo in the same way they do iui and then the 2ww
The cost is a lot more expensive and the prices clinics quote can often not include the cost of blood tests and sometimes scans..They also dont include the price of drugs The prices vary from clinic to clinic so it can be worth shopping aound to get a bargain but most have waiting lists..It's important to find a clinic/dr you're happy with .There are lots of threads on here for different clinics  and the hfea's website lists all of the different clinics.
If you call the clinics they will send you their prospectus with price lists included.
Hope that has helped..

P.S. The complimentary therapies thread has some bits on that may be worth a look at for how to regulate your cycle..
