Can someone please advice me what the best folic acid tablet are to take.

I took 1 months worth of Clearblue Folic and and need to start this months, but which is the best?  plain old folic, Pregnacare, Clearblue or are there others??

Also should i be taking Multi Vits??  Had one failed IVF and now starting ICSI in July.

Hi there
I've been taking Pregnacare since beginning ttc (2 years !!) which contains right quantity of folic acid.
However, I also bought Marilyn Glenvilles book & read up on her quantities of supplements which were higher than in Pregnacare, so as well as taking that, I also take extra multi vits (also contains some folic acid), zinc with vit C & selenium (as well as Evening Primrose with Starflower up until ovulation - helps with PMT & also helps create good "right" cm - especially since I'm Clomid).  The zinc & selenium are supposed to help aid implantation as good for healthy nourished womb.
Not sure if that helps  ???
Wishing you loads of luck &  ^fairydust^
Take care

Hi Kelly

There isn't a 'best' folic acid tablet out there, only varying amounts. As you are probably aware folic acid is proven to help prevent nural tube defects such as spina bifida, so it's a very good idea to take it before you start treatment.

All the off the shelf tablets contain the same amount of folic acid, the only difference being that some also combine this with other vitamins and minerals. I am on a higher dose of folic acid which is only available on prescription becuase of the problems I had with my last pregnancy.

I was worried that I was only getting the folic acid and 'missing out' on the other vitamins and minerals, but several consultants I have spoken to have told me that you get the same amount of these through eating a bowl of cornflakes each day. Their advice was to eat healthily and include lots of healthy foods such as fruit and veg, and avoid 'stressing' foods such as alcohol and chocolate (not going to give that up totally though - its the only thing keeping me going at times! ;D )

My advice would be to stick to a 'Boots' own or similar as the pregnacare and clearblue offerings can be really expensive and don't offer anything different. I found that Boots do a great "Mum-to-be" tablet which is good value for money, can be taken before conception and includes multi vitamins which are specially to help pregnancy.

Hope this helps.

I used Sanatogen pro natal which is a multi vitamin, but contains the correct amount of folic acid in it.

I get them from Boots - and use my Boots points, so they don't cost a penny (well, sort of)!!

Hi

I also have taken sanatogen pro natal and am still taking them.  You can take them throughout your pregnancy too.

Like Kim I buy them from Boots and they seem to be on a three for two offer most of the time.

Hi all

Thank you so much for your responses, I have gone for Pregnacare as that seems to have all the vitamins in that you need.

Good luck to everyone
