Hi

We're looking to go on holiday with our 2 year old along with my best friend, her husband and their 12 and 8 year olds in Dorset, near the coast for a week next August.

Can anybody suggest anywhere - somewhere a bit different would be good. We've found this place: http://www.featherdown.co.uk/ but it's not cheap. And this http://stockgaylard.com/yurt-holidays/yurt-holidays.html isn't very near the seaside.

Just somewhere fun for the kids to play together and the adults to chill out in would be good - campsite, self catering cottage etc.

Thanks!

Droogs I can't recommend anywhere in particular but we used this company for our 'summer' holiday earlier this year and they seemed quite good / organized and the house was great ....

Any way they cover the Dorset area.

Dorset is my favourite part of the country!

I would suggest somewhere in or near the Weymouth area. The surrounding area there is just absolutely full of things to do for children. One of the best and safest beaches for children in the country with traditional Punch And Judy, the sand sculptures, fairground style activities on the beach and plenty of seaside shopping/browsing to be done. Surrounding area there's loads of touristy things to do (Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Portland Bill, Abbotsbury swannery or children's farm, Chesil beach, makerel fishing, sea trips, sea life centre, Lodmoor country park, the butterfly farm, Brewwer's Quay etc. It is very geared up for family holidays. It's an hour's drive to Poole or Wareham where there's other stuff to do (monkey Sanctuary, Corfe Castle etc.), and then about the same to Lyme Regis.
The only complaint I have about Weymouth as of now is they have been digging up every road into and out of it in preparation for hosting the sailing events at the Olympics... when I was last there in the summer it was nightmarish to get around!

If you wanted to go camping in the area, I spent many happy years camping at Sea Barn Farm but their sister site West Fleet Farm is perhaps better geared up for children as it has a pool and clubhouse (although Sea barn is cheaper but you can use the facilities at West Fleet if you don't mind a little walk. I preferred Sea Barn becuase you could walk down to the fleet and see the sunset over Chesil beach). Failing that, if you wanted something a little more civilised, you could probably rent a cottage for somewhere around £600 to £800 per week (depending on how much luxury you want, how close to the town you want to be and when you are going). I've just booked a cottage for a long weekend from this company: http://dorsetcoastalcottages.com/ but if you google search for cottages in Dorset/Weymouth/wherever you will find loads of sites offering a fairly wide range to suit your needs.

Good luck!

C~x

Thanks for the replies, we decided to be hippies and go for the yurts, though the campsite looked really good too x
