Hi girls

Wonder if you can help.

I have blocked tubes with severe endo.  I have no reason to think that I have hydrosalpinx but was wondering how it is diagnosed.  Does it show on a scan or do you need a lap?

Many thanks

Hi Becca,
I have a hydrosalpinx in my right tube (and twisted Left tube !! :() This was diagnosed after a laparoscopy on the 3/11. I'm not sure if they were aware of the problem prior to the lap. as i had an internal scan to check if i was ovulating ok, and she took some time to find things!! .....She may have had an idea from that. Definately diagnosed from the lap though. I have to have the one with Hydro. removed on 11/02 prior to starting IVF :'(
hope this is helpful,
Good luck to you

Thanks Rachel.  I'm sure everything will be fine.  I'm glad to they are sorting you out before starting ivf  ;)

I'm asuming the consultant would have picked it up during my lap last year.

Hi Emily  :)

Hi Becca,

I had blocked tubes diagnosed back in 2000 from a laparoscopy. Since then I've done 5 IVF cycles and on each cycle they had been able to see a hydrosalpinx around both tubes when they did the ultrasound scan. When I started IVF they were only small but as it's gone on they got bigger. I managed to get 2 +tive's but they ended in early m/c. Me and DH had all the m/c tests done and nothing showed at all. They think that the fluid from the hydrosalpinx had been leaking into my womb and stopping the embryo growing.

In January this year I had surgery to remove my right tube which was badly twisted and the lovely surgeon re-opened my left tube. Me and DH have let nature take it's course for a while but no miracle has happened. However, I went back to have a HyCosy test where they push dye thorugh the open tube and it is still wide open so no more hydro's for me!

I've just started down regging for my 6th IVF cycle and hoping that this time will be the one!!

Sorry to waffle!!!!

LOL, Andrea xxxxx

hi becca,
back in late 2001 i took ill with bad pains.at that point after doing tests and scans  they discovered that i had a large cyst on my right ovary. the pain was dreadful. then in feb 2002 i had a laparoscopy they discovered that i have severe endo, which had damaged all my tubes and most of my insides. they could'nt get at the cyst or burn or treat the endo as it is that bad!!so they just closed me up again and hoped for the best? after more horrendous pain which at this point had taken over my life, and being in and out the hospital every other week with pain the doctors had had enough of my suffering that they then decided for me that it was time for me to go through the menopause  :(        and here i am today still in the same way! i am on so many tablets per day that i dread to think what i ever would be like if i ever had to come off them.
we are going through our 1st ivf cycle hopefully in march 2005. which we are worried, nervous, excited all at the same time!! im finding it hard as to what i would do or be like if we get a bfn and how we go on from there?
i had a scan done the other week and it come back very disappointing as it come back to show that after having treatment for the last few years the cyst had not shrunk and is still causing me enormous pain!!
before all this happened back in 2001 we had a miscarriage at 7wks....this was very hard to cope with as we had been trying for a long time...but obviously it was'nt to be for us!
so like everyone else on ff we live in hope that like you we too will hold our new baby in our arms and we will have had our prayers answered until then all we can do is to keep everything crossed and live in hope!!
take care!

Hi,
I got diagnosed with hydrosalpinx recently, they thought they could see it on my scan but i then had a lap to confirm. About 7 months ago i never had hydro so im presuming it can just come in a short amount of time, maybe you could ask your dr specifically to check for it if its worrying you.
I had two choices, either take it out or take a chance at trying to fix it, i chose to fix it.  Hopefully its worked!  ^bow^  we find out in jan!
Good luck with your treatment.

Thanks girls for your replies.

Andrea - loads of luck to you and dp  ^reiki^.  I really hope this is the one.

Tracey - I'm so sorry your having a crappy time.  You have obvisiously been through it.  I hope your endo calms down.  I assume you've tried Zoladex.  It does work for everyone but it does give you some respite from the pain.  You can also have ivf straight afterwards.  I have had 3 endo cysts, one burst and one drained.  Could the cons not drain yours?  We have an 'endo chit chat' thread on the 'inbetween txs' bit.  It would be lovely if you could join us.  Take care.

Summer - thanks for the info.  I'm having some immune tests at Notts CARE so I'll ask them to check my tubes.  I'm not being paranoid, it's just we've spent a good few thousand on tx and dnot want to waste any more more or time  ^eyes^

Thanks again for the info  ;)

love

Hello becca,

I know I'm a little late, but I wanted to let you know have hydro on both tubes due to endo, though I don't seem to have any anywhere else (apart from possibly one of my ovaries?).  I also have adhesions very badly between my bowel & uterus and have had several "regular" cysts on my ovaries.  The hydros were diagnosed at laparoscopy in the usual course of infertility investigations, and the endo when they investigated the tubes after removing then in prep for IVF!

Hope this helps,

Love Ros - xx

Hi All
I have been dx with Hydro just from a HSG.  My GYN said sometimes if they're real bad they can be seen on ultrasound, she didn't spot mine from that though. But when i had my HSG she said the left was blocked and the dye showed the tube looked like a 'string of sausages' (bizarrely) which she said is almost certainly a hydrosalpinx. Though i do have to go for a Lap to confirm and decide on the plan of attack!
Hope this helps.

Sorry I mentioned what must have seemed the obvious, I should have read your thingy at the bottom of you message.  I cant believe they put you on Zoladex for so long.  I thought it was only lincenced for 9 months use max.  Glad to hear you are going on holiday.  You have a great time, it might be (hopefully) the last one for a while if tx works  :).

TTCTOOLONG - thanks for the info about hydro showing on a scan.  I appriciate it may not always show but it's good know that it can do.

Thanks girls

Got a strange question.  Mid Feb, I had an HSG done to look at a suspected blockage.  My doctor was there and he showed me briefly the HSG.  One side was 'white' and one side was 'black'.  He didn't tell me the results but said that there was scarring and blockage, and said that we'd discuss at our follow up appointment.  So I assumed that the black side meant that the dye went in but didn't come out....and thus, hydrosalpinx.

At our follow up mid March, he took us into his office and said that the blockage was at the top so it wasn't hydrosalpinx.  This surpsried me as from my comment above, but I didn't question him.  At out appt, he didn't look at the results so it was like he was going from memory.

My question is...what does hydrosalpinx look like on an HSG xray?  Would it be black or white?  Maybe I"m mixing up the sides and the white side was the blockage where the fluid didn't even go into the tube and the black side was dye left from flowing through it on the good side?  Should I question him again when I see him in May?

Hi There,

I think hydros look black as they are liquid and scarring is white, but can't be sure. I would question him again when you next see him.

Take care,

Thanks Pooks.  What a beautiful newborn you have.  Congrats!  I hate second guessing the dr when he said one thing as I don't want them to feel that I don't trust them...but it has been bothering me.  One side was white and one was black.

So what would normal look like (i.e. dye flows through the tube)?

Hi

If the fluid in the tube is radio opaque ie meant to show up on xray it will be white. So if the tube is full of fluid which has been introduced into the uterus to show whether the tubes are patent, this would be a radio opaque dye and show up as white.

If you have had a scan with no dye introduced then the fluid would be
radio lucent (black) on the xray or scan.

Hope this makes sense!

Just adding this to clarify!

So the side which is blocked will show with no dye and will be black on xray, and the side that the fluid goes into will show up white.

hhmm i would really wait till you see the specialist, i had scan last year that showed my hydro had returned + it was described as mass of internal echos + was black swelling, now having this TX cycle i went for more scans as you do to track + the sonographer asked me if i has hydro ??? i think as it looked dark thing being i now have no tubes so you see how confusing it can be so i would wait till you see the experts  ;)

i will say i dont understand the comment about because your tube had a blockage at the top it wasnt a hydro ??? both my tubes were clubbed + fused together at the ovary end with hydros
