I thought some of you may be interested in a study that was reported in the Economist. It said that the quality and quantity of sperm produced in many animals is improved when these animals are in competition with other males. Scientists in Western Australia* tried to reproduce this effect in human males and were succesful in increasing sperm motility in the subjects. The effect occured in males who had been shown a pornographic image where two men were with one woman. (it didn't occur when the image was of three women). So get those porn mags out! They also noted that carrying a mobile phone close to the testes (eg. in trouser pockets or coat pockets that hang in that area) had a negative impact on sperm numbers and motility.

*The study was originally published in Biology Letters by Sarah Kilgallon and Leigh Simmons at the University of Western Australia and appears in The Economist June11th-17th 2005 p 83.

Ha Ha Roomby. Maybe this study needs to come to the attention of whoever puts the magazines in the 'men's rooms in the clinics  Certainly makes a change from no smoking no drinking and lots of vitamins!!

My mind is running riot wondering if something simular may inprove egg  quality.  Well can't do any harm!!!!

Hi Girls,

Looks like a bit of "pop" research picked up and over-hyped by the papers maybe?

This study was done by a group of animal biologists and I'd rather take my infertility advice from a human infertility specialist. Found Biology Letters online with an abstract.  It's a new journal and mainly reports on general animal topics.

My guess would be that the animal biologists have their own agenda but all researchers will have a basis....

Hi I was wondering if any one could tell me what the recommended vitamins are for MF infertility - we are trying to get numbers up with a view to doing IUI (have always done ICSI) not much hope but worth a go. Only thing is - I cant seem to do a search on here and have no clue where to start.

Hard to know as there aren't any good randomised trials to my knowledge.  This time me and DH took zita west vits they are quite pricey but when you are desperate etc!
