HI, I'm new to this site so I hope I'm posting this in the right place!  My husband and I are about to start the journey of assisted conception and I'm really nervous and scared about the whole process.  To date, we have both had tests ( i had an internal scan and he's had some sperm checks) and the results show that I'm normal but my husband's sperm has little or no motility - hence we were told we could not conceive naturally.  He's had tests to check whether the problem is hormonal and since its not, the doctors say that its likely that although he is producing sperm, they're just not getting out as it were.

Anyway, I have just had a letter confirming my first appointment date for Queen Mary hospital in Roehampton next month with a nurse and I really don't know what to expect! So far, the doctors haven't been very helpful and keep saying they don't know the particulars so I feel really on my own and scared!   All I know is that based on the letter my GP would have sent, a nurse will do some tests accordingly.

Could anyone help me by telling me their experiences and what I can expect from this appointment and also after this point?  I hate not knowing...!!

Hi Toffeecat,
First of all, sending you lots of  ^hugme^ ^hugme^ The not really knowing what is happening is really difficult.  First of all, even though it looks like you are male factor, they will almost certainly want to do blood tests on you too just to check that you are ovulating and don't have a high FSH, etc too.  Only once they've done every test they can think of (including another SA - sperm analysis - on dh to check that there wasn't something wrong on the first) will you get an appointment with a consultant to discuss your options.
If you do come out as simply male factor then there are a few options.  Firstly, is it just his motility that is poor?  Are his numbers and morphology (shape) ok?  If it is just motility then you might want to ask on here what people have done to improve that (can't help you myself as my dh's problem is morphology).  If you can't improve it then your main option is probably ICSI (this is IVF but where they inject a good sperm directly into your eggs).  I am making quite a few assumptions here and am no expert but hope this helps as bit.
Anyway, you have found the right place for support and advice so just keep asking questions.

Hello Toffeecat, welcome to Fertility Friends. :)

It sounds to me liek you will be having ICSI, which is the usual tretament process for male factor problems like yours. From your point of view it is just like normal IVF but the guys in the lab do an extra bit to make sure your eggs fertilise.

There are a couple of Roehampton threads you might like to look at, which will give you an oportunity to ask othe rpatients from there exactly what to expect:

While undergoing treatment, you might find it useful to join other ladies having treatment at the same time. The Cycle Buddies threads are just for that. You will fnd a thread, usually with a funny/inspiring name for this year's buddies. Just pop along to the appropriate month and say "Hi" when you are ready to start treatment.

^hello^
& Welcome to FF Toffeecat ^hugme^

Could anyone help me by telling me their experiences and what I can expect from this appointment and also after this point? I hate not knowing...!!

You will find lots of help in the starting out and diagnosis threads
also just by reading other members stories/signatures that catch your eye ;)
Its not easy starting this journey as you do feel uninformed and out on a limb, but FF will help you navigate the maze/lottery that is Fertility treatment, I would recomend getting yourself and DH on some Wellman/well woman vitamins and all the basic advice about diet/lifestyle, as that puts you in control even if you need more invasive treatment.
Caz has given you some wonderful advice and links, be sure to check them out. I would like to encourage you to post in these areas to build friendships and support from members who really do have an understanding of your situation,

To make the site easier to navigate click on the index tab at the top of any page - pink hearts mean there is something new within the board you have not read/looked at and if you scroll right down you will see the last ten posts from all over FF all are clickable ;) if you refresh this page (f5) it will update the last ten posts as well as the boards/threads and who's online!!!
take some time to look at the help tab too ;)

Check out the Locations boards for where you live & a site search for your clinic ;)

Wishing you Friendship ^fairydust^ & ^reiki^ ^reiki^ ^reiki^ ^reiki^
^goodluck^

If you need any help just ask!

^hello^ Toffeecat

to FF :) You have come to a fab site for great support and also understanding of the journey of IVF.

I am sorry to hear of your problems trying to conceive. It sounds like you will be having ICSI, which is what we had :)

You have been given some great links so have a look at them. I would really recommend the Cycle Buddies thread as it allows you to talk to other ladies who are going through treatment at the same time as you.

^goodluck^ with your treatment.

Hi Toffeecat and welcome!

I'm totally with you on being confused.
Both me and DH have done a lot of tests too, and my endo specialist then said he'd refer us to the fertility expert. We then got a letter giving us an appointment with a nurse, not saying what it's all about... I was rather confused about this since we've already done all these tests. Talked to my colleague today though, who's had IVF, and she said that the initial appointment will be about taking more tests like HIV, hormone levels, genetical screening (maybe, at least she did), and telling them about your and your family's medical history.
Well, my first appointment is tomorrow, so I hope I can finally have some answers.

Wishing you all the best!
