Hi I'm new to this site and have been currently taking the DR drug for 4 days now, with IVF planed for July. I understand that acupuncture is very useful but on talking to our local 'DRCHINA' the treatment was recommend for my husband and not me (the fertility issues are with him). Should I therefore not bother? If I should, how many treatments should I have and when in the IVF cycle is most beneficial?^idiot^

I'm really nervous about providing the best possible chance for this to work and I don't want to leave any stone unturned if it can up our chances of success. :-[

I'm soon to be 29yr   and have been told if I have two embryos put back I'm at high risk of twins. I've always wanted twins but now I'm worried that I'll have complications.

Any advice or suggestions on the questions above all greatfully received, ^pray^

Hi & welcome to FF :)

Ideally acupuncture should be started several months before starting treatment....although some women do just have acupunture on day of ET...twice, before and after the transfer. Although it may be your partner who has the fertility issues, it is you who is going through the IVF process.

However, I would be cautious of somewhere like Dr China. I would only ever have acupuncture with a registered practitioner and one who specialises in fertility or at least has strong working experience and knowledge of women going through fertility issues and specifically IVF as their is a very strict protocol that should be adhered, primarily on the day of ET. Also, whilst many clinics will be fine with you having acupuncture, the majority will strongly advise against any form of herbal remedy (including chinese medicine) through treatment as they can interfere and react with the prescribed drugs.

I would have a read of the Acupuncture sub-board under the main Complementary Therapies board...

http://www.fertilityfriends.co.uk/forum/index.php?board=14.0

and here's a link to a thread on that board with info on how to locate a registered practitioner in your area...

Good luck ^reiki^

Hi there,

I've had five element acupuncture for 2 years and it's totally changed my life.  I started having it to try to boost fertility but also wanted it to help with stress and general health.

I would definitely say that it's really important to get a good practioner who knows what he or she is doing and whilst you can talk things through, you shouldn't have think about your course of treatment yourself, that expertise is part of what you pay for.  The other thing is that I've been having the traditional five element method and I know that the modern method can be less effective for some people and even painful.  The five element method involves lots of talking too which is really helpful and the difference in my energy levels and general balance is fantastic.

I recommend that you visit the Bristish Acupuncture Council website at www.acupuncture.org.uk and search for a practitioner in your area.  They will all be licenced, of course, but also registered with the council which is a really good starting point. I'd go for it whatever your timings are and just see what they say.  It would help you in pregnancy too which could be particularly good if you're carrying twins and concerned about that, (we've going for the same option and I'm concerned as well, but it feels like the right thing to do!).  www.sofea.co.uk is another good site for advice.

Loads of luck and let me know if you need any more acupuncture info.

Clare xx

Hi Birdy!

Know what you are feeling i am on my 5th day of DR and the fertility problems are with my DH!

If you intend to have accupuncture you really need to start now, look in the yellow pages for approved people and ask them about it, you will soon know if they know their stuff. I called about four people and eventually my hairdresser recomended some one for me, i called her and i knew straight away she was on the ball- they advise about 4 sessions and one on the day of ET or as close to it!

Good luck ^reiki^
