I don't know if any of you can help us out with a dilemma.  We were all set to go with IVF starting in February - we've got our appointment scheduled for next Thursday and would probably start downregging in the third week of Feb.

However, today I've had the first appointment with an acupuncturist who has suggested that we put back our starting date by three months so she can work on both dh and myself.  She doesn't feel that I'm emotionally or physically ready at the moment . . . and she may have a point there.

I've become very sceptical about complimentary health practitioners over the past 18 months having been to both another acupuncturist and a reflexologist both of whom claimed to be "infertility experts" although this turned out to be far from the case.  This lady certainly seems to 'know her stuff' as far as this is concerned as she has been a midwife for many years.

Do you think it would be sensible to give the acupuncture a chance and do proper preparation over three months or should we just 'go for it'?  We've only got enough money to probably have one cycle of IVF - so should we spend a bit more on acupuncture?  I'll be 39 in April so I'm always worried about the old biological clock ticking on and I don't want to waste time unnecessarily.

Any thoughts or opinions or experiences that some of you might have had with acupuncture would be appreciated.

Many thanks!!!

Dear Angel,
It's a difficult one!  I two am 38 and have been having acupuncture for 8 or 9 months and acupuncture with Chinese herbs for approx 3 months. After 3 failed IUIs with acupuncuture I gave myself 6 months of purely acupuncture and herbs before I wanted to try IVF.  Each time my period arrived I felt disapointed and had less faith in it. Now I have just had to abandon my 1st IVF because I have not responed to the drugs.  What I'm trying to say is that it is all a gamble and it depends on your state of mind. I would say try the IVF and then if that fails continue with the acupuncture knowing that that you are just going to try this and this only.  Perhaps that way you can have complete faith in it.  For me when ever the treatments fail I have more faith in the alternative and when the alternative fail I have more faith in the treatments.  Go with your heart and good luck with it.

Hi Angel,

It is a difficult one!!

I have been having acunpuncture for nearly a year, I had it all the way through my first ivf, even before and after et (the german protocal says it increases your chances by a good 20%)

Unfortunately, our cycle failed!!

We are gutted! I gave up alcohol, non-organic meat, tap water, preservatives, additives and had regular acunpuncture! I took loads of time off work and it still failed!! Where as my friend ate what she wanted, smoked, drank and no acupuncture she's now pregnant with twins!!

For my next cycle i'm not having acupuncture and am going to do what i feel my body needs! As my clinic says if the embryros are mean't to survive they will!!

I spent about £1500 on acupuncture so it does put the cost of ivf up, though worth it if you get a positive!

Good luck with your tx! and making that decision!

Please feel free to ask any other questions...

Love

(((Emma))) and (((Susie)))

So sorry to hear that you've not been lucky so far and thanks for your replies.  Emma - I know from your other posts that you've only just had your IVF cycle so I can appreciate just how gutted you must be feeling right now.

I'm rather cynical about alternative therapies too I'm afraid - hence my question.  Emma, since I know you've been going to Oxford, do you mind me asking where you were having your acupuncture?  The woman I saw yesterday mentioned that all the ladies she's been treating have been going to the JR - I didn't warm to her but was impressed that she was actually a midwife.

I hope things will look up for both of you in the near future,

Angel

Hi Emma, :)
I just thought i'd post as i've recently had acupuncture for my neck pain ...I asked her about treatment for IF , she said it is helpful for relaxation and personal pampering but would not help with mine as I basically have blocked tubes!! no alternative therapy can sort that out!!.....before i knew about my tubes , people kept saying try reflexology etc. ....I did go once , but could've spent months and loads of money when it really wouldnt have done anything for me .....apart from calm me down and relax me , which I think is also beneficial when going through other treatments. To sum up i personally think you should go ahead with the IVF and use the acupuncture as a relaxation therapy as it won't sort your IF out. I don't mean to be too negative but I've been there too and spent out money too !!
I've recently started yoga for relaxation and another focus to all the IVF stuff, it's great and a lot cheaper - £3.60 for an hour and a half.

Good luck with it all,

Hi Angel - very difficult one!  I have recenlty come through a second failed IVF attempt and had acupuncture and chinese medicine the whole way through and although my response was much better to the treatment than it had been the first time and I was beginning to think that maybe acupuncture and chinese medicine were worth forking out for etc, I was well chuffed off when the chinese doctor decided to defy the bleed I had at the end and the negative pregnancy test I did by arguing that they were not indicitive of a negative result and that I should continue with acupuncture and chinese medicine for a further 2 weeks because he believe I was pregnant ....... erm don't think so .... thankfully I had my I know my body better than you head on and argued point blank with him that he was wrong and indeed he was very wrong ......

I think you have to go with your gut feeling to be honest and do what you and your hubbt feel is right for you two have you spoken to your clinic about it?

Good luck with whatever you decide

Hi Rachel and Anna,

Sorry to hear some more unhappy stories and I hope you both get to realise your dreams for that little bundle one day.

My head has been in turmoil since yesterday when the acupuncturist recommended postponing the IVF for at least 3 and probably 6 months to fully prepare my body and mind.  I've been reading everyone's replies carefully and been talking to friends today to try and decide what to do and I've decided to go along with my gut feeling and get on with the IVF.  I had acupuncture and Chinese herbs for about 5 months last year as well as reflexology and to be honest didn't find any real difference - the reflexology was relaxing but that's all.  I don't trust this new therapist even though I'm sure she's got a fantastic reputation and everything but I just felt she put me down and made me feel stupid - she was a bit of a bully actually and the acupuncture session I had did nothing for me at all.

One friend had a very good suggestion which I will pass on as it's not something I've thought about before.  She suggested going to a hypnotherapist who also specialises in NLP (neuro linguistic programming - essentially reeducating the way you naturally respond in learned ways to situations.)  She thought that if my main problem is getting stressed out and having a tendency to be negative, this could help in a big way to overcome these problems and help with positive visualisation.  There's a guy who does this out of one of the local doctor's surgeries so I'm going to see if I can find out more next week.

We'll get there girls!!!!!!

Hi there
I read your thread with interest. We've just had a 2nd BFN on DIVF & I was thinking of trying acupuncture this time. I've tried reflexology through the first 2 treatments which helped with relaxation & ensuring regular cycles & my FSH level coincidently decreased, but who knows about the science. i do have fibroids & wonder if they are a problem & had heard acupuncture might help but also wonder how you find & decide on a therapist. The reflexologist came with a personal recommendation but i don't know anyone in Yorkshire who's had acupuncture.

Hi Angel,

I would not put your treatment back, i have just finished acupuncture and now on my  2 week wait, i was told you need only about 5 weeks of acupuncture  while going through TX, also the consultant told me not to go to a Chinese herbalist or acupuncture, as western acupuncture are different!! our hospital recamended someone for me and he was there on day of transfer he hired a room and saw me for a hour before and a hour after, its sounds to me like they are trying to get as much money as poss from you.

good luck

Hi Angel,

I had acupuncture & Herbs before, (intensive) during & after my 1st IVF attempt, although I was advised to wait 3-6months, unfortunately it failed, but I produced 18 eggs & the lining of my womb was thick & healthy, the prof that done the ET believied a 100% that I would have a +ve pg & laughed when I said the acupuncture had given such good results.
I believe the acupuncture aided the above & that it minimized the effects of the IVF drugs, but only you know if you're ready to start.
My acupuncturist now believes I should wait a further3-6 months before my FET to start next month; a part of me thinks I should wait & take her advise as when to start, but the other part of me says go ahead drug users, malnourished women all over the world fall pregnant every Day I'm as healthy as I can be so I may as well go ahead. The Dr's, acupuncturist etc are not God;
if its to be it will happen & we all need to have faith, So follow your heart & do whats right for you!
All the best, Shahzy

Hi Angel and the rest of you girls,
I have acupuncture with an infertility specialist now having had it previously on my last cycle with a woman who I wasn't that comfortable with.  The guy I see now makes me feel much more confident and I do believe it is having some effect on my periods and how I feel.  He is very thorough about diagnosis and really easy to talk to.

I only found him a couple of months ago and he did tell me that ideally you'd do 3 months acu before tx, one full monthly cycle seeing him once a week and then reduced to once a fortnight.  He also is a TCM herbalist and recommended I did chinese herbs.  In the end I actually brought my tx forward by a month so we've barely had time to do 2 months tx, and he was really cool about it, just said we'd best get on with it then!  He's going to do german protocol for me and be on call for a session before EC and one after ET. He has also never tried to force me to take herbs (which I didn't want to), he just gave me some print outs about what he recommended and said I could think about it.

I respect him for not forcing anything on me and not making his treatment of me conditional on following 'his path' - I think if you find a good acupuncturist they will fit in with you, not the other way round.

One question I would ask is what does the acupuncturist think she would be needing the 3 months for?  What does she believe are your issues?  My acupuncturist asked me questions about my periods and my cycle for over an hour before coming up with a diagnosis.  He believes its to do with my endometrium not clearing out every month so although several months would maybe sort it good and proper, he had time to sort out a better period for me in one month before tx.  If on the other hand, your cycle is very irregular or your hormones are all over the place, she may need more time to work on this.  Just saying 'you need 3 months - kerrrr-ching!'  ;D is not good enough.  Ask your acupuncturist what she can do in a few weeks cos that's all you've got.

Another thing, my acupuncturist told me that the german protocol (derived from a study where a number of women were given acu before EC and after ET - and more of them got pg than the control group who had none) is exactly the same whether you're doing IVF or trying to conceive naturally.  He would use the needles in the same place at a similar point in your cycle to the 'false cycle' you get with IVF.  This means it must help with conception whether you have fertility issues or not.  Your acupuncturist should therefore at least be able to do this for you (it needs no other acu before hand) and it may help.

I've heard good things about NLP if you're nervous or stressed - never tried it myself but I can't see that it could do you any harm.

best of luck,
Claire xx
