Hi,

I am a new member of this web site and need some advice.

I have been ttc for 2years and have just finished a 3mth cycle of clomid.  My blood tests suggested that I only ovulated once in this period.  My DH also has a high % of abnormal sperm.  My consultant has done no further tests and has now referred me for IVF. 

From reading other posts, I feel this may be a bit premature.  I thought I would have a lot more tests etc.

Unfortunately, at my last appointment (on the NHS) my consultant was not available, therefore I have a lot of unanswered questions.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter.  Will I have further tests as part of the IVF process and how long will I be on the NHS waiting list as private treatment may be an option depending on cost.

Any help would be grateful.

Hope that I can help by telling you about my experience. My husband has low sperm count and low motility. We were very quickly referred to have ICSI ( a specialised form of IVF when the sperm is so poor that it has to be injected into each egg) I had a few tests- blood test at day 21, my tubes checked and a scan. Once my husbands results came in the answer was ICSI. There was no further testing of me, as in the end there are very few options if the sperm just aint up to the job in hand. They would not even let me try clomid (as i was not ovulating regulary). So it appears that even in getting pregnant it's the man that has the important job. Typical!
I've started on my first cycle now and have still had not further tests done.
In answer to the NHS/ private question, it depends where you are. I could not wait a possible 3 years(chester area) for the NHS, so have had to go private where there was no waiting list- just a couple of months to get sorted. our cost is about £3000 including drugs, but ICSI costs a little more than IVF.

I have had day 21 fertility tests but that is it.  No tube checking or no scans.  My local NHS is Warrington, i am being referred to Liverpool Womens.

All I can say is that I am sure the clinic that you have been refferred to will carry out any neccessary scans etc at your first appointment, make sure you do plenty of homework and write down all the questions which you may want to ask, as trust me your mind will go blank at the appointment 
they will be able to answer all your questions regarding waiting lists etc, but be prepared for it to be years rather than months, I have to pay privately as NHS is not available in my area so I am no expert but from other posting I have read the waiting lists do seem to be quite long 
I know its hard having to wait, you take one step forward and seem to take three back, I too am playing the waiting game at the moment and its very frustrating, Private treatment costs seem to vary by huge amounts and depends on things like weather or not your GP will prescribe the drugs, I am paying £2500 + drugs per cycle (full IVF) there maybe other options for you to reduce the cost, you may only need ICSI or maybe if you fit the criteria you could think about egg sharing which will reduce the cost to about £500 per cycle

I'm also being partly 'done' by liverpool. My egg collection is at Chester, then my husband does a egg dash to liverpool where they will be baked and put back in apparently!

and to repeat what dydie said ....do write a list of questions as you will forget!

I had a lap & dye op to check for tube problems, might be because I was 35 at the time - no problems, checked FSH levels by blood test.

DP had several sperm an.
Then I hadmonitored clomid cyle x3 with scans each month.  Waited few months to see consultant, waited again to go on iui list, now on 2nd iui & am now 38!! It is very slow & the nhs don't seem quick to advise private ivf.  Iui only has a 9% success rate (NHS official stats) so feel I have wasted time I don't have - would hate to see others make my mistake!
