Hi
Ive been taking something called maca for a few months - it is supposed to help with fertility and regulates hormornes
Does anyone know if it is safe to take during a cycle?
Also I see that a lot of you are taking  protein powder - I found some in Holland and Barrett and it seems to be the stuff that body buliders use!
Is that what everyones taking and if so how much of it do you need a day?
thanks

At long last ... someone else who has heard of Maca.  I bought some and started taking it - I bought two bottles of the stuff, each containing 90 capsules, took 4 per day and have finished them now.  I really dunno if they have done me any good but the blurb that came with them and all the stuff on the internet about them made them look really good!  I am currently on my 2ww after having my 5th iui and stopped taking them before I started stabbing!  I, personally, wouldn't take them while doing tx.  Waiting to see now if they have done anything for me and if I get a BFP!  Did get a BFP on my 4th cycle of iui but sadly m/c'd.

Let me know what you think of the tabs!

Take care

Love

Thanks Karen
I also thought it was just me!
I have been taking the powdered form for about 3 months as well as having acupuncture - I definately have more energy but  dont know if it has affected the right bits!
I think I will stop during treatment as its supposed to have an effect on hormones and I dont want anything to interfere with tx
Wonderful that you are in 2WW!
Take Care of your self and I will keep everything crossed for you

Hi macaroni

not a nurse but I have take herbal remedies in the past and have been advised its a bad idea to combine them with conventional therapies as they can interact with each other and give unwanted results.

Clare

PS how are things going with the cycle ?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii)      organic
ok, this product may not be suitable for all of you but it could certainly help some of you. look up the research on this on google or jeeves, better to use the botanical name as you find more info and less sales gumf.
maca has been used in IVF trials and the results appear to be better then the ivfs without. its a 'super food' root used for centuries in south america. please look it up, theres so much about it and fertility. i have now met several people who concieved on maca and have wonderful healthy 'maca babies' (and also from personal experience it does have an improvement on impotency)

p.s better to buy in capsules as it's taste is enough to make you gag and despite what people said to me it does not get any better......!!

Hi girls,
Maca is supposed to help with fertility, but I'm not 100% sure how??? I have been looking around for the best buy and have so far come up with a couple on ebay (American and u.k) around £15 give or take for 100 capsules. (includes postage) cant decide which ones to get so I think I will pop down the herbalists and ask them.Holland and barrets do a horny goatweed and maca (£20) but the label made it look like something you would buy from a dodgy mag!!! ??? so I thought just maca was the answer!!!LOL ;D
If anybody has found it cheaper then please let me know.

Improving pregnancy rates by means of polarized maca based phytoterapy and intratubal insemination

Summary
This prospective randomized study aimed at assessing whether Andean phytotherapy based on polarized Maca (Lepidium Meyenii Walp), combined with low-dose recombinant FSH, may improve pregnancy rates in an intrauterine insemination (ITI) programme. To this end, two homogeneous groups, including 63 selected couples each, were compared. In group A, without Andean phytotherapy, 13 pregnancies were recorded, i.e. 11.8% per cycle, with a 20.63% global pregnancy rate after 4 attempts. In group B (polarized Maca+ recombi nant FSH), 35 pregnancies were recorded, (26.51% per cycle), with 55% global pregnancy rate after 4 attempts. The difference between both was statistically significant (p < 0.001).
Introdution
In the last few years Maca, a perennial plant of the lepidium meyenii walp peruvanum species, was studied in our Institute for its polyendocrine value and for its balanced mineral content, both particularly fit for use in adjusting cycle-related hormone imbalance and in reproductive medicine. (1,2).Early research on the botanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological properties of this plant includes the studies by Gloria Chacon, that started in 1960 and were published on Peru's biology review in 1990(3). The authoress demonstrated, in a study carried out on rats inoculated with alkaloids obtained from maca, the regulating and stimulating action of the active ingredients contained in the maca's tuberous root on samples of rat testes and ovaries. Laboratory tests clearly highlighted a stimulation of ovarian follicles and an increased thickness of the endometrium in female rats, as well as an increased number and motility of sperms in male rats. (4). R. Aquino, V. De Leo, F. De Simone, and colleagues believe that the sterol fraction is mainly constituted by systosterol (45.5%), campesterol (27.3%), and ergosterol (13.7%) (5). The high mineral contents of maca is rather interesting: calcium, iron, magnesium, copper, iodine, silicon, phosphor, potassium, as well as manganese and zinc are found in ideal proportions, that are especially important for man reproduction (Table 1).

This has just been recommended to me and I wondered if anyone had ever heard of / had any experience of it?

Yes, I have used maca many times, but not consistently, so I can't say I gave it a good try.  I did use it for 2 out of 4 natural IUI cycles, and the proof to me was that I had a stronger lh surge, thicker lining, and larger follicle.  I could actually feel my ovaries while taking it & I could compare the feeling with stims & being very similar.  What I did find out about maca is that it is an adaptogen, it doesn't work directly on your hormones, but indirectly.  Being a poor responder during ivf, I did take it initally during my 2nd ivf cycle because I read it wakes up the fsh receptors.  My E2 did take off substantially the 2nd ivf, but both were bfn anyway.  And I wouldn't mix that again with IVF drugs.  I've noticed since doing the meds though that the maca doesn't have the same pow that it did (unless my maca just lost it's potency).  It definately does something, that's for sure.  And it is an awesome libido booster, and increases cm (though not necessarily EWCM).  Good luck!

Cathin - Thanks you so much for your reply. :-* I hadn't heard of it before and I was a bit nervous to try it without some testimony from someone who knew about it. I think the libido effects alone merit me giving it a try! LOL!

Hi,

I'd  just be careful taking it after ovulation.  I noticed my temps were seesawing when I tried that.  I've also found out it raises DHEA and human growth hormone, but in an indirect way (naturally).  It certainly increases CM.  Most studies have been done on men (those peruvians must be a male chauvinistic lot-they're probably only interested in a natural viagra) & it's also great for sperm.  Not many naturopaths/acupuncturists can give you any guidance as they don't know much about it either.  It's loaded with nutrients and even a few that are entirely only found in maca.  I would give you the links I had, but they were lost during an update of Mozilla.  I had them on ovusoft, but they keep purging old threads.  So they've been lost :'(    Good luck - hope it works for you!

Wendy

P.S.  Make sure you get organic too!  Maca has a pest problem, so it is highly sprayed with pesticide.  The organic you won't have to worry about that.

Larkles - Yup! I am indeed following Nadia's advice(we're on first name terms now
. I actually ordered some (from Nadia...
) so I'm just waiting for it to arrive (with my shiny new moon chart for next year)

I don't need to worry about DH, he read my report thingy and he's like, 'Well let's see what Maca root does for us!' We're gonna have it in a smoothies each evening when he gets home from work and wait for the hornies to get a hold on us!

Cathin - Hi Wendy! Thanks for your advice and what a shame about those links... I'm getting excited about it now, I can't wait for it to come and we can get started! I did go for oganic stuff though... I usually only buy organic everything, and I went for the powder rather than tablets 'cos I HATE taking tablets.

Thanks for the good luck. We can but try, eh?
