Hi
I was wondering if anyone can help me ?
I am having reflexology at the moment,we are having IVF and I was wondering when I should stop it , or can I continue with it through out treatment, I am sure I read somewhere you shouldn't have it in the 2ww

Thanks

Hi Jo

I was told (and followed the advice) that you can't have reflexology after EC.

I have heard mixed reports (12 or 16 weeks) as to when you can start it again ... apparently it can also be very very helpful in preparing you for the birth.

Hi, my relexologist said that it is safe during the 2ww as long as the reflexologist knows what they are doing and avoids certain areas etc but because there is a risk most people choose not to.
I trust this woman implicitally but it would be awful to have that seed of doubt if I did go for a treatment and anything went wrong.

I am a qualified Reflexologist and Tutor and would suggest that you should avoid Reflexology during IVF. The reason for this is that Reflexology works to balance your body and achieve homeostasis. The IVF is designed to unbalance your hormone levels. The two, in my opinion, conflict. You would be better to leave the Reflexology until after the IVF. Hi

I'm not sure if this is the correct board for this topic but not sure where else to put it ::)

I had reflexology on Thursday afternoon and have not felt right since, i was dizzy straight after and had an awful headache, yesterday i had a headache all day and just felt a little down in the dumps. Today i feel awful, the headaches have gone but i'm really emotional and feel totally depressed, is this normal???

I have had reflexology before but with a different lady and i dont recall feeling like this so i'm wondering if it is reflexology or if its just a coincidence :-\

Thanks for listening, sorry :-\

hi kim
I have seen a reflexologist now for a month and she says that it is normal to have a headache and to feel so low. Its all these pent up feelings and they have to come out somehow or someway. I gathered from what she has said to me this can last for a few weeks until all the toxins are out of your system and your hormones etc are becoming more equally balanced. I think if the headaches etc carry on for more than a month then it would be advisable to tell the reflexologist.
Also to let her know each week how you feel this will also put your mind at rest. I can honestly say that it made me feel so depressed and talk about rainy Britain i cried half of it. I beleive these emotions need to come out and now my spirits are slightly lifting..
What harm can this alternative tx do but help to get your body to its best ready for any fertility tx that you may endure in the future. Also you read articles where women have become pg on this type of alternative treatment..
Stay in there gal. Believe in it. Warn the hubby on the day that you are going for reflexology (keep away) ha ha.
With love astridxx
p.s i believe in it as well, which i think helps and there can be nothing more unhealthy than the drugs you have for ivf etc..

Hi Kimmy

After any treatment you can experience symptoms like you say. This is actually considered to be a good sign that something is happening and your body is working to get back into a balanced state. In order to help things along remember to drink plenty of water (you should be drinking around 2lts a day) and avoid alcohol for at least that evening if not for 24hours.

However, you do need to ensure your therapist knows how you feel. it is a good idea to keep a symptom diary.

Thanks Girls

My Therapist said that i might suffer from headaches but that was normal as it shows the reflexology is working in eliminating toxins, however she didnt warn me about feeling suicidle ::)
I'm not too bad this morning (so far so good) and i picked up yesterday when dh came home and insisted we go out for dinner, i really didnt feel like it but i'm so glad i went now :)

How often are you supposed to have reflexology? My next appointment is in a months time, but now i'm thinking that i should bring it forward, perhaps 2 a month ??? my therapist said there is no hard and fast rule about how many sessions you need.

Thanks again girls

Hi there,

I'm a Reflexologist. It is fairly common to experience a mild reaction after a treatment that can last for 24-48 hours. Symptoms could include dizziness, tiredness, needing to use the toilet more, runny nose. This reaction is a very positive thing indicating that the body is responding to the Reflexology and working to rid your body of toxins that it doesn't need and rebalance your system.

If you have symptoms lasting more than 48 hours, consult your GP.

Some Practitioners refer to these reactions as a 'healing crisis'. You may find that after subsequent treatments, you are fine, as the body will have done the major rebalancing initially.

By balancing the body, it is almost like a detox. The depression could be an emotion that was lingering around and the Reflexology is helping your body to deal with issues that need dealing with.

Try to take time to relax and drink plenty of water. You should find that you'll feel great very soon.

hi thomas
Thanks for your input about refelxology. Its also good that you are trained so this info that you are giving to us is factual. I experienced all the symptoms after the reflexology and i felt emotional, headaches after every visit. I am now beginning to feel alot better and think this is a positive move.
I also think that the emotions were lurking, but i did not realise how many box of tissues i needed. Ha ha, my poor dh.
Thomas i am also in the process of seeing a homeopath, i heard that this complementary therapy also goes hand in hand with reflexology. Please could you advise i would apprieciate it.
Thanks for your time.

Hi there,

Yes Reflexology is a complementary therapy which means that it can work very well alongside orthodox medicine and also other complementary therapies such as Homeopathy. Reflexology is based on the principle that there are reflex points on your hands and feet that correspond to all of the organs, glands and parts of your body. The unique thumb and finger walking technique used by a Reflexologist helps to stimulate fresh blood supply to the organs and glands and works to help the body to balance, improve blood circulation and relax.

If you are planning to mix more than one therapy, it is always best to let both/all practitioners know, so that they are aware of any changes in your body/reactions.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything else!

There is always a debate between reflexologists and acupuncturists in terms of enhancing fertility.
I always go through the official 'bodies' to get lists of reputable qualified alternative therapists.I am not sure but i think there is a National or British Association of Reflexolgists and probably similar for Acupuncturists. You will find tel nos and websites from the internet and when you ring them up they will be happy to advise or send a list of therapists in or near your area.
Sorry I can not be more specific but you will definitely find details on the internet.
By the way there is also an advanced form of reflexology that is meant to be especially good for fertility. It is called A.R.T and again with a little patience you will find the association on the internet.
Good Luck

hi TJ

I have had reflexology and to be honest I am not sure if it helped with my ovulation problems etc but it certainly helped my state of mind. I would come out of each tx like a space cadet - very very relaxed and calm....lovely.

I have also had acupuncture which, I believe has helped me a great deal and in a more direct way, I saw a general improvement in health etc. I don;t find this as relaxing though.

There are a couple of associations on the web and they should be able to point you in the right direction. ensure that whoever you use has appropriate qualifications and insurance. They should perform a thorough consultation before hand and explain what the treatment is about. If you don't feel you are getting this before you have a treatment I would advise that you make your excuses and leave.

Hi Tjb

I had reflexology for about 4 or 5 months and then stopped because of going onto tx. I do like it still and until I had to give it up I was part trained to do reflexogy, thats the impact it had on me.

Acupuncture - I started beginning of November last year and have basically been once a week since then. I went throughout tx although I stopped at the point of ec until test date.

As we are male factor too DH has also been and found a marked improvement in his health and in combination with vits we had our best test result ever for morphology from 2% to 7%. He is still going because it keeps him on top form - he is now every month or so.

The people I went to were not fertility specialised but were people who i found through the relevant association and felt very comfortable with their approach and knowledge. To give you an example the acupuncturist first session was a 2 hour consultation to get medical history etc. I have to confess the key with my lady was she had ahd someone she was treating who was waiting for IVF and she became pg. She did not claim this as a success for acupuncture as there was no way to prove it and also that she could not guarentee anything.

Good luck with it all

Thomas,

I had two sessions of reflexology and although I was warned I might feel down etc., I didn't feel any change other than being relaxed. Does this mean that I am not responding to reflexology?

No, not at all. Some people have a serious reaction, others it is more subtle. If you're feeling relaxed that is fantastic. It probably means that you are not seriously out of balance but your body is responding by calming you, helping to achieve homeostasis, improving circulation and nerve supply etc. You don't particularly want a 'healing crisis', but it is just something that happens particularly if someone has a major problem or is in desperate need of help.

Hi ladies,
Well, I've decided I've tried the green tea, I've spent a fortune on OPK's, I've stopped the alcohol ^drink^ (hardest bit!), am on 4th round of 100mg clomid & now wanting to try reflexology ^pompom^.
What do I look for (any specific qualifications), how often will I need to go? How much (approx) does it cost?
Any advise gratefully received (& any other suggestions!).
Lots of luck to you all!
