I've posted on the male factor board but I hope it's OK to ask here as well :)

Can anyone give us a recommendation of someone to see about investigating/treating varicoceles (enlarged veins in testicle causing poor sperm quality)? Or how would/did you go about finding a good specialist?

Thanks

Hi Jen,

My dp was refered to the Urologist at our local hospital by my consultant when I was having iui treatment. I must say she was really reluctant to do this and even sent me a letter saying 'I don't suppose it will make any difference'! What an attitude! it still staggers me to this day and he was refered 18 months ago!

You could try getting your gp to refer you, or just phone up your local private hospital and ask, it was the same Dr working at both places down here in Brighton.

It seems to me you have to be really pushy about this varicocele thing as most of the medical profession don't think it makes any difference to male fertility. I see you've posted on the Male factor board so you've probably seen the figures I put there.

Also, once dp saw the urologist he had to wait 6 months for the op so it's best to get things going asap.

Lots of luck to you,

Love Allison xx

Thanks for that advice Allison. I did see the stats you put up and they are impressive. Shame but understandable there might be a wait before getting anything seen to. We'll approach our GP and see what she says! (I might try a few phone calls myself just in case!)

Also want to say mega congratulations on your pregnancy!! (you're a good advert for getting varicoceles seen too!)  Wonderful - enjoy the next 30 weeks!!

Hi Jen

Just to say we went to see Mr Ramsey (uroligst) he is excellent - a few of the girls recommended me to him. he works at THe Lister, Chelsea and West, Harley St and various other clinics... He did the usual tests on my DH - blood hormones, genetics bloods, scan and physical exam, SA. He made my DH feel at ease... and we chatted to him about Cornells in NY and other clinics - he is very approachable. In my DH case he didnt think varicoceles would have any effect on his sperm quality.

Another top andrologist is David Ralph - specailises in male hormones and urology - we havent seen him however I have heard very good feedback.

WE paid privately to see Mr Ramsey we didnt want to have a very long wait on NHS... some healthcare covers initial investigations into infertility too - depending on your policy if you have it...

My Dh has hardly any sperm - they struggled to find 11 swimmers - took them about 6 hours! and ICSI worked for us 1st time...

Wishing the best of luck. PM me if you need anymore details, Debs x
