Hello all,

I have just started taking agnus castus as I have a short luteal phase . I am 40 trying TTC and had 2 IVF with BFN. ( Next treatment maybe in september). But I am sure I can get pregnant nat with the right herbs ( tried accu and chinese herbs did not work , if anything madeit worse). So I have taken a. castus for this month and already changes. Although spotting since day 17, I am on day 25 now and no periods yet, although imminent ( tomorrow or day after). I ovulate everymonth usually on day 12 or so ( and period on day 21 or 22 or 23 when lucky). Anyway, this month I ovulated on day 15, and on day 25 , despite heavy spotting, no period ( which are normally very very heavy and extremely painful ( without ibuprofen plus I am on the floor screming! Paracetamol does nothing).
So, this sounds promising , as normally it takes 3 months to really work . Question: how much agnus castus should I take , how often, and more importantly, should I stop at ovulation ( like I did thid month, or carry on all cycle, and should I take it during period. I find many contradicting info on Internet.
Second question, does anyone know of a good herbalist who could maybe help me with a dosage best for me? I live in London. It does not have to be a well known one, ( celebrity status does not always make the best therapists or docs!).
Thanks for any sugestion.
Wishing everybody the best  ^reiki^

Hi

Agnus castus is a potent herb and although it's readily available in most chemists/heathstores, ideally you should speak with a qualified herbalist before taking it to advise when it should be taken and what dose, specific for you.

I've not taken agnus castus as never felt the need to (I ovulate fine every month and don't have any problems with my cycles) but I have read of many ladies who have taken it and there appears to be a mixed response regards whether it helped or not.

I would speak with a professional herbalist though as you may find there are other herbs which may be beneficial or at least they'll be able to advise re AC.

You can search for a local registered herbalist on this website...

Good luck

Hi Minxy,
Thanks for your post. Will look at website. I have started to take Agnus castus and it works ! for the first time since I stopped pill 7 years ago, I have had a normal cycle of 27 days! with a much stronger ovulation ( strong LH levels) at day 15. Still a bit of spoting for a week before but hopefuly will get better.Out of precaution I don't take it after ovulation ( read many stuff on internet from girls who got pregnant while taking it that way, but according to some erbalists on internet, it can be taken during first 3 months of pregnancy, and thoughout cycles.
I agree though to get a stronger dose or increase the frequency it is better I see an herbalist.
I don't think I will take other herbs though as I have taken in the past chinese herbs, prescribed by accu, and it did not work at all. Went worse!
Thanks again for your advice, it always help and good luck with your next cycle! ^reiki^

Hi J,

Good luck to you too. I use the tincture , and it works very well in terms of regulating cycle. I heard that the tincture was the best. I take now 35 drops in the morning in a glass of water before breakfast. I read a few books about it, and this was the advice from herbalists. Some say to take more, but to start with , I believe it is enough for me.What dose are you taking?
Apart from a better ovulation and a longer cycle ( 27 days), my periods were less painful this month too. But it takes between 3 and 6 months to get a stable result.
I have been advised by my accupunturist to take it during all cycle and just stop at period. Last month I stopped after ovulation. What about you?

Have a nice week end.

Hello guys - I know this thread is old, but I too have a question about Agnus Castus -
Futuremummy, I am taking 4 x 300mg tablets per day - two morning, two eve (because I think I read on this site you should try and take about 1000mg per day??) - and I too was thinking I would stop them after ovulation BUT not sure about this because I want it to help regulate hormones IF don't achieve BFP this month  ^reiki^

Am I taking the right amount and if so would you think stop at ovulation or carry on through to BFP (fingers crossed!) or through cysle, and past AF if no BFP?

Any advice gratefully received

NBR,
Hi hun, I can't really answer that one as everyone is different. You may want to see a professional ( herbalist, nutritionist) , I know that Zita West and Marion Glenville are good.
Personnally I have taken it all the time except from period. Started by taking it only up to ovulation but my accupuncturist said to continue.
The only thing I would recommend is to take the tincture ( I took it morning, 20 drops) not the pills. It works better.
The Vogel brand is a good one.
I have stopped at the moment as just had lap and hyst and was on pill for 10 days to rebuild lining, and now about to have AF, and feel I should let my body rest a bit nat, and I don't plan to take any herbs for another month and then will ask a professional what I should do next and what I should take.
Best of luck,

Why should it not be taken whilst on your period?

#9 ·
you can , I prefer not to as it make my period more difficult to start, it is still heavy but I spot more and thicker ( sorry TMI) so I feel , for me it is better if I stop just before period is due. Still while on agnus castus , my period was lighter.
You can try both and see for yourself, or ask an herbalist what is best for your own case.

Hi Ladies,

I was wondering how you are getting on with the Agnus Castus?

I have been taking it for about a month now, so was surprised when I started spotting brown blood on CD30, as my cycles are normally 38-42 days long, but this then continued for another five days and on Sunday 7th April I had a very very faint positive, but after testing again later that day it was negative!!!

The nurse was adamant you can't get a false positive, but I'm not even sure I ovulated as my progesterone on CD26 was 14.4 (this was two days out, as blood is supposed to be drawn 7 days before period and mine was 5 days).

As I now have negative test and my blood levels were 2 (the next day) they have no idea whether I had a chemical pregnancy or not, I just have the fertility nurse saying you cant get a false positive...I even showed her the test to check myself and my partner weren't going mad!!

I'm so confused because whilst my progesterone levels improved quite dramatically 0.9 - 14.4 after taking Agnus Castus, I haven't actually had a proper bleed. My periods have always been extremely light and tend to be more brown then red, but this month there has been no period at all, just constant brown spotting!!

I've started the Agnus Castus again now it has been confirmed i'm not, or am no longer pregnant, but am concerned whether they could be the cause of the weird period?!

The fertility nurse seemed positive when she saw the test, but another doctor said the test could have been dodgy?! Just wish the bloods had confirmed one way or another because now I have no idea whats going on.

I'm now on CD 46 since my last proper period. I've been spotting brown blood since Sunday 31st March!!!

^idiot^

I'm really worried as whilst my periods are always light and irregular (long cycles), I have never missed one, so is the Agnus Castus the cause of this?!!  ^idiot^

Hi
I started AC last month as my cycles were getting shorter (25 days) and I was ovulating early.
I took full dose (1000?) for first 2 weeks of cycle. It pushed back my ovulation to day 14 and I had 4 days of Ewcm (usually only get 1 day) and incredible O pains. My cycle was 28 days! Didn't BMS this month :(
Only down side, is I have had really really bad acne (I have clear skin as an adult but bad skin as a teenager) so think I'm only going to take 2/3 tablets this month as I think it may have pushed my progesterone up too much - my skin is soooo oily. Thought I might try 1 tablet after O in case it was the sudden drop off that caused the acne?

Hi,

I've been taking agnus castus for 2.5 months now as I have pcos and consistently low progesterone levels.

Since taking AC my progesterone each month has increased from 0.9 - 1 - 3 - 14.4 and this month 23!! I'd defo recommend this herb. I am hoping over 20 could mean  I have ovulated?? ^idiot^
