DHEA or OCP

Hi ,

I've recently had my 5th ICSI and took DHEA for 4½ month prior to starting.  I turned 40 before this tx also and have had all my cycles within the last 2 years.  I usually stim on 300 iu and get around 9-11 eggs, it had been 6 months between my 4th and 5th cycle and had my AMH redone in the interim and it hadn't changed.

It was decided to up my drugs this time to 375 iu Puregon to try and get more eggs/something to freeze, on my baseline scan I had less antral follicles that I had the time before so I started on the max dose of 450 iu.  I had a scan on day 5 as I requested it, my clinic generally do day 8 scans with SP as the first scan.  Anyway, my follicles weren't doing much at this point and I was sent away to come back on day 8.  There was development at this stage but the growth was slow, my drugs were increased to 600 iu as the cons felt recruitment hadn't taken place at this point, a mix of 450 Puregon & 150 Menopur.  A scan a few days later showed they were growing better now and I had recruited a few more follicles also, I stimmed for a day or 2 longer than usual and had the best embryos we'd ever had but my concern is whether the DHEA had a hand in slowing down the growth of my follicles by interacting with the stimulation drugs.

Has anyone else had this slow outcome after taking DHEA?

Also, I took the pill for 6 weeks continuously before starting and wonder whether this was a factor too by possibly oversuppressing me .. any thoughts anyone?

not sure what ocp is but im on dhea and would love to know answers to your questions too.  I have heard on ff's that there is a time in the month when you should stop the dhea...not sure when.....anyone know?

thanks

Hi Angels,

OCP is the oral contraceptive pill.

ANDI - I have taken DHEA in the past and have also taken the OCP before some of my cycles and in my opinion your oversuppression would have more to do with the OCP than the DHEA. And you've also taken it for 6 weeks, anything longer than 21 days on the OCP I would say is way too long, especially for the more mature ovaries like ours.

Best wishes,

Thanks Algeria,

Those are my thoughts too.  I had a follow up but clinic wouldn't really say what they thought, apart from it happens to people sometimes, which isn't what you want to hear when planning what's best to do next  ^idiot^  I won't take the pill again though.  I did on a previous cycle but only for 21 days and had no problems then.

I've since googled and found some info on oversuppression with the OCP.

Thanks for your reply

Angels - In very broad terms, if you are doing a LP (long protocol) you would downreg with drugs like synarel etc before starting stimms. If you are not doing a LP but a SP (short protocol) instead, some clinics then like to prescribe you with OCP before it as way of you having a 'mini downreg' anyway as it should quieten the ovaries and have nothing happening in there just before you start with the stimm drugs so you can start it with a 'clean slate'.
Also, another reason could be for 'timing' you tx, eg. if you want your CD2 start exactly on a certain date you can then take the pill lets's say for 21days and, as you usually would bleed 2 or 3 days after stopping it, you could roughly plan when your CD2 (the day that you usually starts with the stimms drugs on an IVF/ICSI tx) will be. Very useful if you want to plan your tx during holidays or if you have to book plane tickets, hotel accommodation etc for tx abroad.

Best wishes,
