Hi just a silly little query,
I have an annoying tickly throat which my midwife suggested taking a simple linctus (pinewood brand) but when I read the label it reads that it is harmful for those suffering from liver disease etc or disease as well as for pregnant women and children.  Now that suggests its not suitable for pregnant ladies? I am right or have i read it wrong.  The pharmacist knew i was pregnant.  Any one know?  Please

Hmmm, tricky one.

I reckon so many medicines are simply stated to be unsuitable for pregnant ladies because how can you possibly test the effects of a medicine on someone who's pregnant - far too risky, so there's a blanket warning of 'Do not use'.  When I was pregnant last time I had a continual cold and the pharmasist wouldn't recommend a single thing.  :(  If your pharmasist knew you were pregnant then I'm guessing he wouldn't have given it to you unless it was OK (did they ask if it was for you - they usually do now).  Otherwise I think simple glycerin solution is OK as it's just a sugar syrup.

Good luck

Hi,

I'm 99.99% sure I definately took Linctus in my last pg for an annoying tickly cough that wouldn't go away - i'm sure the MW and pharmacist recommended it.

If the pharmacist knew you were pg I am sure it must be fine.

Pop a post on the MW board on here or call your MW 1st thing just to double check - or NHS direct they probably know

I had really bad cough at about 24 weeks and pharmacist recommended simple linctus - got it home and then read ingredients - freaked me out when I read stuff like chloroform   Never took any of it, decided jsut to sstick with safe honey & glycerine instead.  Cough eventually got better after about 8 weeks  ::)  but no harm done.

I was recc Pholcodeine by my GP when I was pg as I came back from holiday with a cough that dragged on for 3 weeks. It's really good for tickly coughs as it supresses the tickle. The one at our chemist contained alcohol & also said not suitable for pg women except on the advice of a GP, there is also a none alcohol one & I found it didn't do the job half so well :(
