Hi,
I am having a suture placed on Friday and the consultant is using iv antibiotics during the procedure to deal with any infection. I have heard that some places use oral antibiotics.
I am a gbs carrier and am really worried that I am clear of this during the procedure. Are iv anti-biotics a quicker way of dealing with infection? How do they compare in terms of how quickly they work to oral ones?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Maria,

Using IV antibiotics gets much higher drug levels in the blood to prevent any infection from taking hold as a result of the procedure. It's very common to use these type of one off IV doses during surgical procedures. They do work quicker than oral and are also used for serious infections where you need to get high levels quickly to deal with infection and stop it getting worse or spreading. In treatment courses it's usual to use 1 or 2 days of IV before switching to oral to kill off the remaining bugs.

All the best for Friday  ^reiki^
