Hi,

I have just started back at work 3 days a week following nearly 2 years mat leave. My 2 little ones go to nursery and im not sure if im doing the right thing. Financialy I dont gain a thing by going back to work, but I did want to return and I was happy for the LOs to go to nursery as I thought it would be good for their development etc. But I now feel so, so guilty about leaving them there. The second day I went to pick them up, my 8 month yr old DS was sleeping. But I was horrified to see that he had been swaddled really tight in a cotton sheet and wraped up n a bean bag bed. I picked him up and took of the sheet and he was BOLILNG hot! he was drenched to his vest. I was so angry as i have always taken so much care not to overheat cos of sids etc. I assumed that safe sleeping would be a problem at a nursery as staff are qualified. I complained to the manager and she assured me that it would not happen again, but I have lost confidence and spent all da in work today worried sick.
I feel like just quitting and taking them from nursery, but my 22 month DD really loves it there.
Just dont know what to think.

^hugme^ It is a really hard desision to make, the whole returning to work one, I've just gone thru it myself and with my 2 I'm not returning to work as i would suddenly have to pay for nursery for 2 when I wasn't paaying at all when I just had 1.  If you were already wondering if you had done the rght thing before this then it won't have helped at all.  Swaddlng an 8 month old doesn't sound right in what was probably already a warm room, we just put light sheets over our sleeping children or a blanket if it is cold that day.  Did the manager saay or do you know if they check the children while they are sleeping?? We have to check them every 5 minutes to see that they are not too hot etc

thanks for replying.

I havent asked the manager about how often they check the LOs but it is a question I will ask next week. I guess that seeing my son swaddled and obviously to hot has made me lose a lot of confidence in leaving my children at all and I am really considering leaving work. I just cannot believe what happened to be honest. When I discussed this with the manager and explained that I was worried about overheating and sids, she said @ I dont blame you, I have kids myself', I will make sure that the staff stop swaddeling'  OK, but how come its going on in the first place and how come safe sleeping rules have sliped. So worried about leaving my DS there next week but I have to go to work and we have to give 6 weeks notice to quit nursery.

6 weeks notice! its 4 here.  Now I work in an NHS nursery rather than a fully private nursery so i don't know what they do but we have a sleep policy so it might be worth asking if they have anything.  Ours is things like being checkd every 5 mins and under 1's should be laid totally flat on a sleep mat or a cot.
Have both your children just started this nursery or did your DD go before DS was born? If she went before did you have any worries when DD was small.
I would talk to DS key worker and the manager, mentioning just how concerned you are and how you would like him to sleep ie with sheet over or whatever you use at home
